I would just wax - I don't know any females who shave down there, for the aforementioned reasons.
Waxing doesn't actually hurt that much, and it lasts for about 3 weeks. It's not at all awkward to get done, and I find that I can actually do it to myself, but not all my friends can.
But yeah, definitely look into waxing, because it's sooo much better.
