Default Body Hair?

Heyy guys, so I'm just really curious cause I'd feel awkward asking this to anyone else. I'm an 18 year old guy with a fairly decent amount of body hair, mostly pubic though. So my question, is just how do you maintain/trim/shave it? Just whatever you have to offer, cause I can't imagine what you do/use... just like a razor? Would an electric one work better? Bahh

Yes, use an electric trimmer so you don't cut yourself. They're not that expensive. Not the shaver ones with the 3 circle things, which are for the face, but the trimmer ones. You can adjust it to the length you want

Body hair, my favourite subject!

Grooming body hair is something that a lot of people have questions about. The most important rule to stick to, though, is to do what you feel comfortable with. Don't say to yourself "Well, I hear that most people like this amount of body hair, so I'll trim it to this length" - it's much better for you to be happy then to try and please other people. The only exception is if you have a partner, then you can ask them what they like, but otherwise you shouldn't aim to do what is seen by public as the most desirable, unless you are actually happy with that yourself.

Now, with that said, it's not a bad idea to try different 'styles' to see if you do like them.

For body hair, it's usually a much better idea to use electric clippers rather than a razor. This is for a couple of reasons:
  • It's much easier to use an electric clipper in areas that you can't see or reach very well, such as the tops of the thighs. Razors can quite easily cause cuts here.
  • Body hair will quite quickly clog up a razor, especially if you are cutting it from full length. You can use a razor after you have trimmed it to stubble length using electric clippers, but before then you'll only get maybe a 2cm patch shaved with the razor before you have to clean out the hair.
  • Areas that are in constant contact with clothing and have pressure applied to them when you sit can become very uncomfortable when the hair is just regrowing out of the skin after using a razor. This can easily cause a rash and ingrown hairs, which are itchy and painful. Electric clippers cut hair above the skin level, so you avoid this regrowth problem.
  • You don't have to have prepared your skin with warm water, shaving foam etc. when using an electric razor.
  • Electric clippers allow you to customise the cutting length with the different shaving head attachments. You can get it to almost-skin level with most clippers.
  • Electric clipper blades don't get blunt and need replacing like a razor.
  • Electric clippers are much faster!

The only downside to clippers is that they won't get your skin completely smooth like a razor does. However, this smoothness only lasts about a day, after which the hair has grown back out of the skin, so the difference isn't that great unless you plan on razoring every day. Bear in mind it does get quite uncomfortable as the hair grows back from under the skin.

I think, if you do shave daily with a razor, your skin will get used to it and you won't get the painful regrowth. But it takes atleast a few months before you get to this stage, and you will have to keep the shaving very regular to maintain it. In my opinion it's better to just use clippers the whole time. If there is one small area (testicles are a common one) that you want to keep completely smooth then you can use a razor there and clippers everywhere else.

You can also use scissors for the pubic region above the penis, where the hair forms more of a 'mass' and you can trim and shape it easily.

I personally use scissors for the pubic area and clippers for the thighs/butt (although I am long overdue for using the clippers again).

I'll also mention other things that you won't be able to do at home unless you have specialised equipment and probably someone to help you:
  • Waxing. Painful, but gets the skin completely smooth and last for quite a while as the hair is completely removed. The hair has to grow from scratch, meaning it takes longer to get above the skin level, and also means that it will be softer when it gets through the skin which for most people means there'll be less irritation compared to regrowth from a razor.
  • Depilatory creams. These are chemicals that break down the hair, allowing you to wash them away. These can irritate the skin, especially in sensitive areas like around the anus/genitals, and may not be effective on the coarser male leg and pubic hair (most are designed for females).
  • Laser treatment/electolysis/other intensive methods. These are more permanent solutions and destroy the hair completely. Expensive, you need to have them done professionally.

How do *I* trim it? I don't. I like it better that way. But that's me.

For all areas with light hair, I just use an epilator. It hurts a bit the first time, but after that you only pull a few hairs every time, and it's no different than plucking. It is similar to waxing, just less complicated

I use clippers with a plastic length guide thing on it. Hair clippers work great pretty much anywhere when you're just trimming. If you don't want to buy clippers, I used to use scissors, but it takes much longer since you have to be so much more careful haha. Good luck

My partner and I prefer a limited amount of body hair. I'm 21, naturally not to hairy. I have really sensitive skin and the best combo for me is Nair for Men, after shave lotion, then fragrance free lotion. The Nair isn't too bad on my chest or stomach, but I'm careful how I use it on my genitals and anus. I shave all but a little patch of my pubic hair. Either way you go, I'd suggest some sort of fragrance free lotion to sooth the skin after.

I'm not the OP, but I'd like to know where you can buy Nair?

Supermarket, pharmacy, etc. I don't know what stores you have where you live. Here I have seen it in sobeys(grocery store), shoppers drug mart, and zellers (like walmart)
