Just be honest. I'm sure there are other guys out there who also like soft rock. Any guy who would dislike you for your taste in music isn't worth your time, anyway.

The thing is - tastes change. Bread and Air Supply and America were once exceptionally popular bands. But now, they've fallen out of favor. The music hasn't changed - the generic popular opinion has. It's pretty hard to find any Limp Bizkit fans these days, too, but that wasn't the case ten years ago.

Just own it. "I love this stuff." That doesn't mean your would-be boyfriend will immediately (or even eventually) love it, too, but it'll mean he'll be more likely to think "This is what he likes, so be it."

Some guys will laugh if u say soft rock, but that's because we're conditioned to like what's popular now and some music is made fun of so people just go along with that even if they might like some of that music. It depends on age too. It's silly and a decent guy won't dislike you if you admit that, he might joke with you about it some, which is cool. If you're talking about music, you could name the bands that you like or say 70's-80's rock, or some other term if you're not confident saying soft rock. I like some of that music too also some jazz and 90's alternative/grunge and really a wide variety (Barry White to MGMT to Kings of Convenience to Roger Miller). So maybe you like other music too or is it only soft rock for you?

No, it is not lame. Everyone's musical tastes differ. I myself am an avid fan of classical music and opera, and even in that genre, I'm sort of an outcast because I typically listen to period performance Baroque music (which is unpopular with a lot of the classical music world). That's literally almost all of what I listen to. I get made fun of a lot about it, but I can shoot back that my music actually requires a brain to listen to it. That usually shuts the haters up real fast. But anyway, just don't listen to the haters. From my experience, when you ignore them, it gets a lot better. And I doubt that people are going to disown you or stop liking you just because of your music choices. And if some do, then they have major issues that they need to sort out for themselves. Just be you.

I’m actually insulted this was anonymous. Why are you embarrassed or ashamed to make a post like this anonymous to us? Why are you embarrassed to share something with us that makes you who you are? Be proud of your choice in music. That is just ONE thing that makes you you the unique and amazing individual you really are. There is no shame in your choice in music but I understand your trepidation. Why not say you enjoy ALL types of music. It’s not a lie, is it? Soft rock covers an array of genres, being a genre itself. It’s like Pop- Pop means “Popular music” but it includes Country like Swift to Rap like 50. Soft Rock could be R&B like Peabo Bryson to Alternative like Sarah McLaughlin. Why not choose a different way of calling it? Instead of saying “Soft Rock” why not say “Adult Contemporary” or just “Contemporary” or “I like mellow chill music, anything calming”? All I know is be who you are in terms of music. Once when I was younger a bunch of kids asked me what I liked in terms of music and I stated “R&B, Rap, Pop, Rock...” and they stopped me at “Rock” and gave me a look and walked away...I’m 22 and I still listen to “Rock” (as well as the others) and I still don’t regret what I said in 2002.
