Default To medicate or not to medicate? That is the question.

*POSSIBLE TRIGGER WARNING AHEAD OF TIME*
I'll try to make this as short and sweet as possible.

Basically, a few months ago, I was put on medication for my anxiety and depression. It was going okay for a while, but then my schedule got changed and I could never take it when I was supposed to so I just stopped taking it completely. I've been off of it for about 2 and 1/2 months now. My girlfriend says that I should start taking it again (basically just because my moods have reverted back to how they were before I started taking any meds at all), but my schedule still isn't decent enough for me to take them when I'm supposed to take them. She says I should take it anyway because I'd at least have it in my system. Problem is, I self-injured (i.e. cut) way more when I was on the medication than I do now.

So basically, I can either take the medication and have better moods but cut significantly more, OR stay off of the medication, be the way I was before I started meds at all, and not cut as frequently or as much at one time.

I don't really want to get my meds changed because this is one that works and it's hard enough finding that for me (plus I hate going to the doctor). The less doctor visits, the better.

Any opinions?

If you are self-harming more on the medication, then it isn't the right medication for you.

I know you said you don't like going to the doctor, but it's worth it to try and find a solution that will work so you won't feel the need to self-harm. That's a pretty crucial part of getting you help, and it makes no sense that you should have to choose between self-harm and feeling decent.

This situation is not binary. It isn't one or the other.

As Chip suggests, go see someone again and figure out what the right medication is for you. You don't like going to the doctor, but I'm sure you'd like being single (because you're girlfriend's only going to put up with your moods for so long) or being dead (from cutting just a little too much) less. So go to the doctor and get the help that you need.
