I started this about 5 months ago voicing females for animations and stuff, and didn't figure out I was trans until last month. I'm starting to regret it because I came out as a transgender/sexual to my Tumblr followers and they were alright with it. The thing is I think people would think it was weird that a transman was voicing females online, especially that I still have a feminine voice range that I've been trying to deep. I wish I could have done this anonymously now, but it's too late for some projects. I won't back out, but should I tell my directors I'm trans, or just link my Tumblr page so they would see the banner in the description? I probably sound like I'm overreacting.. |

However, I do know that many voice actors do, or have done, voices for both male and female characters so I wouldnt be too worried about it. The directors will be more interested as to whether your tone is what they are looking for, rather than any specifics about you.

I'm assuming some voice actors have fallen into that "cult of celebrity" that most celebrities have, with people following them on Twitter hoping for an inside peek on their private lives and all. But I'm assuming that's more for people who have other outlets of fame (famous actors who do voicework on the side, like Mark Hamill), or somebody like Billy West. But I'm assuming most of the others generally remain fairly anonymous to all but the rabid fanbase. Given that, I don't think being "found out" as trans would have a negative impact on your career. It'd be more like people finding out that, say, the writer or set designer is gay - they don't have the same sort of "celebrity status", so it's less of a big deal. So long as you do the voice, I doubt directors will need to know or care. ![]() Lex |
