Nope--my dad did when I was little and it put me off the stuff for good--our backyard smelled TERRIBLE...
He quit cold-turkey, though, because he had a surgery and the doctor said, "Quit. No nicotine patches, no NOTHING. JUST QUIT."
So now he's addicted to mint gum .
My sister does because my dad did and she's about 20 years older than me...*sigh* I think she has some kind of lung disease now, but I'm not sure...

Cigars, Hookah, Pipes... anything but cigarettes because they taste horribly.

gahhh, never.
my parents do, and im quite seriously the ONLY ONE in my family over 12 that doesnt.
its kind of ridiculous.
but i hate the smell/taste/look of them, so nevaahh.
but if you do, that's a choice...not one i support, but it's your mistake i guess.

I used to smoke for a year, from freshman year to the the start of sophomore!

I've been completely 100% clean for a year.

One day I was like, "Hmm... I don't feel like it."

And I quit. Wasn't hard. ^_^

I have some family memebers who are heavy smokers. I have friends who have but now don't. I have friends who smoke other stuff. Psychos. Even though I'm practically surrounded by smokers, I'll try ti not smoke any cigars, cigarettes, etc.

No. I just can't stand the smell. My grandpa used to smoke, and it was almost impossible for me to be around him. But he quit, so now nobody in my family smokes.

About a year and a half ago I smoked a few cigars. Damn they tasted and smelled good. It was kind of expensive though (some were around 15 bucks a stogie), not to mention bad for my health. That and it was also the middle of winter and in my neck of the woods it drops to about -40° C so standing outside in that weather takes some of the enjoyment out of it.

I could probably count the number of cigars I smoked on both hands and I don't really plan to smoke again. I wouldn't turn one down if it was a special occasion or something.

I've tried it a couple times and I will smoke one now and then, but for the most part I try to stay away from them. My dad's lung collapsed when I was little so that's a pretty good deterrent. Plus, I don't like the way it makes your clothes and car smell. Yuck.

No, I think it's a disgusting habit and it's a big turn off for me. But I don't judge others for it because it's their choice to do what they want, just don't do it near me.

I love the smell of campfire smoke, it's a little weird but I love standing in the smoke so I smell nice for the next few days... I love camping.
Anything besides campfire smoke I can't stand, I'd never date anyone who does and fortunately none of my family smokes. Just walking by someone smoking makes me cough for a while afterwards so I probably wouldn't even be able to start.

Both of my grandparents used to smoke (they quit in the last few years) but neither of my parents smoke. I never got to meet my mom's dad because he smoked (lung cancer), so I really never had much incentive to begin in the first place. Not to mention I really hate the smell. And why must so many college kids smoke? It's like I can't even walk ten feet without somebody smoking at me. It's disgusting.

I don't smoke, and hope I never will but......

I have this odd attraction for people who do (as long as they're not a chronic smoker)
The smell of smoke on peoples clothes reminds me of happy things for some reason even though my mom's friends who smoke are definately not bright people. I'm not just talking about guys. I can't breath second hand smoke though, I honestly choke.. but it's that left over scent that brings me euphoria.. idk why.. haha

I've tried cigarettes and I think they are vile. However, I do smoke hookah on occasion, and I love it :)

Even Hookah I can't stand the smell of, nor can I stand the smell of 'pot' (whatever that is anyways), or any form of burning tobacco. That's just me though.

And it's more than just the smell: the fumes are very toxic to my body. The smell of this stuff merely alerts me.

Anything considered smoking is absolutely disgusting to me, period. It doesn't matter if it's a cigar or a cigarette; in my eyes, a smoker is a smoker, and those who smoke cigars are just as bad as those who smoke cigarettes. For anyone who doesn't identify as a smoker but say that he or she smokes a pot or a cigar every once in a moonphase, I think he or she should be ashamed for even having tried it at all in the first place. One may not identify as an attacker or an injurer, but if he or she injured someone, he or she is just as bad as those who hold such a reputation. For me, it's as plain and simple as that.

While I respect the person's right to do as poorly as they wish to their own bodies, I honestly can never understand why someone would start in the first place. The only leniency I can see myself providing is the fact that one may have given into peer pressure. But speaking of peer pressure, even the chain had to have started somewhere: why did the original smoker start smoking?

I generally don't tell other people that I'm one of the worst when it comes to smoking like I'm telling it here. For even speaking in half the tone that I'm implying here, I've often been accused of insensitivity and/or being too demanding of things that I have no control/power over. For example, when I confront someone or a group of people for smoking too close to the front porch of my appartment suite and ask them if they could do it somewhere or sometime else, not to mention that I sincerely do it in the kindest, calmest manner that I can, he, she or they would be all, "Why the hell are you telling me/us to stop smoking here? I/We can do whatever I/we want! Why don't YOU(!!!) move away??" Sometimes, they even throw in a, "Where are your manners?" (??) (It's interesting how they would speak of my manners when they themselves aren't being courteous of the respiratory health of other people whom their smoking affects).

The most disturbing incident was one that happened last year that especially got me extremely annoyed and disappointed: my roommate had the nerve to bring all ofhis friends over to smoke "weed" (Whatever that is) and pot in the appartment suite's living room after we've both been through it 500 times that I'm extremely bad with smoke. His friends then apologized sarcastically and laughed. And then, oh, the anger he provoked in me (and I mean this literally: I'm not a person to get angry very much in a lifetime), my roommate had an even bigger nerve to call me "unsympathetic" and that I need to learn some "people skills", forgetting the fact that he was being rather uncivil to the very people who were living in his suite. *sigh* I guess for people like him, once a smoker always a smoker, and they won't admit to doing anything wrong when they do it; they will just never understand in sufficient depth why and how they are bothering and hurting people with their smoking.

If I may also add, what's appalling to me is that some of the younger smokers, high-school and adolescent age, go out smoking in public, displaying it as if they aren't going to get into any legal trouble. They should know that the LEGAL age of smoking is 18, or perhaps I was taught wrong information in my government class?

Jebs
19th Jun 2008, 01:58 AM
Honestly Lowest I have never seen anyone get into trouble for smoking except at school (in high school a while back). I don't get a legal age on smoking though. Just like I don't understand a legal age on drinking. So lame.

LowestVocal017
19th Jun 2008, 02:03 AM
Well, I guess that's understandable. After all, if there was a legal age placed on "homosexual activity for men" (that is still currently widespread in many parts of the world!!), I would most likely feel as you do about smoking. ;)

Smoking hookah is a very culturally enriched experience. I usually only smoke it with my middle-eastern friends where it's been a tradition with them to smoke it. To get technical, hookah doesn't actually burn the tobacco, but rather it roosts it. I'm not saying it's good for you, but I've never so much as coughed from smoking it.

Also, I do not identify as a smoker, nor do I feel any need to. I am not addicted, whenever I smoke it, it is truly a cultural//social outing. I define a smoker as somebody who smokes habitually to get through their day.

I had one puff of a cigarette once, at a concert. I personally find it disgusting, but I can imagine how hard it is to quit, and have sympathy for those who do :(

My mum used to smoke when I was a baby (thankfully not while she was pregnant with me) but she gave up, because she was so ashamed of having to hide from me while she smoked, because she didn't want me seeing it as I got older.

I've never smoked, and I don't really plan to. I have a terribly addictive personality, and I'm very impulsive. Smoking and drinking would do horrible things to my life. Also, I have alcoholism in my family, so I'm predisposed to the addiction, which doesn't help things at all.

I've had a go a couple of times when I've been out and people have gone outside to use the smoking area. Can't seem to get the hang of it though. This is slightly worrying as millions of people smoke, so it shouldn't be that hard!

I'll probably keep trying until I get the hang of it, but I'll never start smoking properly for health reasons. I just want to be sure that if I have to smoke a cigarette for some reason, maybe etticate or whatever, I can do it without looking like a complete tit.

Paul_UK

I use the outside smoking areas with friends that smoke sometimes, and just don't smoke. There is no rule that says you have to smoke out there, and nobody is bothered that some people don't.

My mom did, but she quit like two years ago and hasn't touched a ciggy since. My dad smokes like a damn chimney though. I went to breakfast with him and he must of smoked two packs by the time he dropped me off back home.

I don't smoke. I value my lungs too much. I feel people should have the right to if they want to smoke, and no one should tell them they can't.

Banning cigarettes from bars and clubs in France wasn't such a good idea, cigarettes are great for starting conversations and stuff. Now we have to go outside and people complain about the noise we make at night =/
But at least we're around other smokers and non-smokers can breath easier :)

They banned cigarettes basically everywhere, in my hometown. You can't smoke within 500 feet of any door on a public place, like you can't smoke within 500 feet of the entrance to a store.

I hate the fact that it was banned. I mean, some people like to smoke and drink coffee at a resturant, and now they can't do that. That's why resturants had SMOKING SECTIONS and NON-SMOKING SECTIONS, to separate the two groups so people wouldn't have a hissy fit about smoke being too close to them. Now, people have to go outside to smoke, and if it's in the middle of winter, you'll freeze your ass off.

Also, a little while after, people wanted to ban smoking in the car. They wanted to tell smokers 'you can't smoke IN YOUR OWN CAR'. God, did that make me mad. If your kid has asthma or something, then fine, don't smoke when they're in the car. Don't ban smoking from someone's property because you do feel like it. They even used little kids on the news, to try and get this bill passed. It didn't get passed, thank god, it was a stupid idea.

Sorry...that stuff lit a fire under me when it happened.

I smoke. It's not something I'm particularly happy with, being very aware of all the negative consequences that smoking has. However, at the same it's something that for some whacky reason I enjoy, especially sitting down with a coffee or a beer.

In aus, smoking is banned within 3 meters of entrances to public buildings, and inside your car if there's young people (under 16? not sure) travelling with you. I guess I can see the sense in the first ban, except that it'd be nice if "smokers areas" or something still existed in some form, not an outright ban. I whole-heartedly agree with the car ban, it's fine to smoke in your own car, but young people who may not have a choice but to travel with you shouldn't be forced to suffer :)

I do. Another guilty pleasure alongside alcohol, but I want to quit.

I get the cravings mostly when I'm stressed, I'm bored or when others around me are. I know it's no excuse for smoking but I do advise anyone who has never tried it to NEVER try it. It's expensive and dangerous. But I never smoke inside, namely because being trapped in a burning building is one of my greatest fears.

I don't feel like paying the massive taxes that cigs bring in and so they need to keep on buying them so the government doesn't have to make up for the taxes somewhere else. (I'd die if they taxed chocolate like that....)

To each his own.

i smoke but i have the decency not to smoke around people who dont beacause if they dont they prob. dont want the secon hand smoke, but alot of people smoke where ever they want to. i guess im like that cuz i have a little brother and i wouldntwant anyone to blow smoke in his face (if they did i would woop their ass)

Is it decency or the fact that it would be illegal? haha Sorry, it struck me as funny.

I can't breath second hand smoke though, I honestly choke.. but it's that left over scent that brings me euphoria.. idk why.. haha

That's good to know. hehehe. I just smoked today first time in like months. I only smoke black clove cigs and usually only when I'm drinking. One of the best things about them is they make your lips taste like sugar.

I don't smoke often, only when the peer-pressure hits me and i am out at a club or something.....

Peer pressure? cmon... really?

But I never smoke inside, namely because being trapped in a burning building is one of my greatest fears.

want to quit? stay inside a building :D .....ok maybe not....

i dont smoke and i hate the smell of smoke.

I do but only like between 5 and 10 cigarettes a day (and the occasional cigar). I only smoke because I get stressed easily but i'll probably think about giving up. It was really stupid of me to start but i've been smoking since I was about 13 and i'm finding it hard to quit. Most of my friends hate smoking though so I wouldn't smoke anywhere near them.

No, and I don't plan to. My parents have smoked since shortly after I was born and I've been asking them every year to stop - my father only just recently quit, and my mom smokes less frequently now that she has a better job, but still....I can't breathe while riding in the car with them, their bathroom smells awful from how often she smokes in there, her teeth are slightly yellow from all the staining....I couldn't stand it. I could never do it myself, and I doubt I could be in a relationship with a serious smoker - the smell is just terrible, and it goes EVERYWHERE THEY GO.

I find this offensive as well, and I never have smoked and never want to smoke.

As for inhaling poison, cars emit 'poision' too, should we ban them?

I mean, it's not good for the people smoking it. Secondhand smoke? It's not as bad as people make it out to be. I lived 13 years of my life with two heavy smokers. I never developed lung cancer or even asthma. My lungs are in good shape. I run all the time, and I play the trumpet, as my username denotes, which takes a lot of lung strength and high lung compacity.

Loads of things are unhealthy. McDonald's is unheathly, but we certainly aren't going to ban one of the most popular fast-food resturants out there simply because people who eat there are more likely to develop serious health problems such as heart disease, high cholesteral, high blood pressure.

Another thing that's unhealthy, motorcycles. A, they emit Carbon Dioxide. B, how many people die a year from motorcycle accidents (ever heard of 'Look Twice, Save A Life?). As for it being unpleasant, the noise, motorcycles are loud as hell.

So, in conclusion, if we want to ban everything that is unpleasant or unhealthy. Well, we're going to be banning a lot of things. I can't even name everything we'd be banning.

Smoke makes me feel wheezy and that is not nice. Also it makes my clothes smell.
One night I went out for dinner with my relatives, and groups of smokers came in while we were eating and it just ruined our meal.

Anything can be unhealthy if you have too much. I dont think having one hamburger a month will be unhealthy thing to do. And motorcycles, they dont come in to a restaurant, making loud noise and producing carbon dioxide. Some rescuers uses them.

Anyway, you might not care but I dont like having smokers around me because it makes my mates feel unpleasant. Some smokers dont care about other people.

Sorry, hon, but I find this statement to be rather false: There are lots of times when I ask people to not and they get annoyed and either play up a drama or demand that I be the one to move away from them(the thing they failed to realize, however, is that if one could, he or she would've, and I most definitely would've ;)). It's good to know, though, that there are those like you who are more considerate and would gladly move away for a smoke-sensitive person. Thank you. :)

My dad smoked like a chimney for 30-40 odd years, a pack of 50 a day.

Annnnnd guess what? He ended up with cancer in his larynx and the muscles around it. So out came the voice box and a whole bunch of muscle. And he has no voice now. -.-
It's his own fault. He ended up with cancer three times and all three times were a direct response from the cigerettes he smoked.

Put me right off the ole deathsticks it did.

I don't smoke, and I don't really understand why people do.

It is called culture. In many cultures smoking is a social thing to do. Only recently has it become so taboo.

And do you drink? That is directly pooring poison down your throat.

And eating saturated fats can also be considered bad. A lot of things that one, even you, might consume are bad for your health. Yet you can understand why such things are consumed?

One other thing, have you ever had an addiction? I have and I can tell you quiting is one of the hardest things you can go through. It can be physically exhausting and even painfull.

I do agree that smoking is not a healthy life choice but I do not condone those who do it. I personally have and I quit. I didn't want to pay for the cigarettes. Not because they were too expensive but because of my friends always swiping them for themselves.

I do drink, maybe one night every 2-3 months at most, once a year at least, but the thing is, I don't habitually drink. Health problems from smoking once every 2-3 months would be similarly negligible.

One other thing, have you ever had an addiction? I have and I can tell you quiting is one of the hardest things you can go through. It can be physically exhausting and even painfull.

Yes, I am currently in recovery from an addiction, and will be 9 months clean this Tuesday ^^ so trust me, I know how hard it is to quit. And that's just it, I took steps to quit because I knew that what I was doing was damaging (even threatening) my life and hurting those around me. Quitting is hard. Mega hard.
