View Full Version : Gay people and finger lengths!?!?

So i guess a few of you may have seen the John Barrowman thing on BBC a few days ago.

For those who havn't the basic idea was that Barrowman was trying to find out if being gay is a nature or a nutrure thing. Through various experiments and research its was concluded that it is decided when the child is in the womb. One cause could be lower levels of testosterone received by the child whilst in the womb, which it is believed could lead to more feminine brain activity, and thus an attraction to men (it didn't really explain how this applies to lesbians, but presumably its the opposite, oestragen instead of testosterone-though i can't claim to be an expert biologist lol).....

Anyway one interesting point was that an indicator for testosterone levels is the difference in length between 1st and 3rd fingers. If there is a large difference it shows high levels of testosterone, if there is little or no difference it shows low levels of testosterone in the womb. Thus in theory gay people may have similar sized 1st and 3rd fingers. So, of coarse, after watching this i decided to measure my 1st and 3rd fingers on each hand, and LO AND BEHOLD...they ARE the same length!!!! I was like 'Noooooo,OMG thats crazy, cool' lol.

So people, is this just a coincidence with me or is there genuine correlation here....finger lengths please!!! lol

If this is true i'm soooo gonna go round all my friends doing this lol

Wasn't there already a thread about this? Anyway...

My ring fingers are longer than my index fingers. I don't know about "large difference", but it's easily seen just by looking at my hands. As far as I'm concerned, the "finger thing" is just one more thing that's "proof" on homosexuals, but "a quirk" on straights.

My friend is very neat, and likes label-name clothes. Since he's gay, that's "proof".
My brother is very neat, and likes label-name clothes. Since he's straight, that's a "quirk".

Those people need to go jump. I don't see how the fingers on one of my hands being the same length as the ones on my other has anything to do with me liking penis.

I watched an episode on Tyra that had a bunch of things about this. It wasn't always true but somehow the scientist guy was able to guess which guys were gay and which weren't. There was something about the spiral of your crown for your hair . :S

And the finger one doesn't apply for me .

i did think this would be the answer to my post-its just a coincidence. Though i do think the programme was an interesting one, and got me thinking about why i am not straight. I have always thought it must be a thing from birth, since i cannot point to anything in my life that could be labelled as a cause of being gay. Thus, i was quite pleased when the outcome of the show was that it was not an environmental thing.

I am of the opinion that you are naturally your sexuality and that is that. The programme had an interview with somebody who called himself an 'ex-gay'. Essentially he decided to become straight because being gay was 'damaging my life'. This guy really annoyed me-you simply can't decide that youre not gay in my opinion, he compared it to giving up smoking--how offensive!!!

How do other people feel about this? Do you think you're born gay or is there something in your childhood that can cause it? And if this is so, can the opposite then happen, can you be come an 'ex-gay'? (in my opinion NO lol) but im interested to hear what people think

My index finger is longer than my ring finger and my middle finger is longer than my thumb. Not much of a proof there.

I have heard this before but only for lesbains. I heard that if your 3rd finger is longer then your 1st then you have more testosterone then normal women. Mine are longer and so are all my lesbain and bi friends *girls* but my moms are also longer and so are some of my straight girl friends. So idk its weird.....

Hm...my ring fingers are significantly longer than my index fingers. My ring finger is 1.2 cm longer than my index finger on my left hand. And my ring finger on my right hand is .6 cm longer than my index finger o.o

DUDE. This is weird. My left ring finger and pinky are both a bit longer than my right hand's ring finger and pinky. And my right hand's index finger and thumb are longer than the left hand's. And not just a little bit. But then again, most peoples' other body parts (arms, legs, face) aren't always perfectly symmetrical either, but iono o.o

Then again, all of my fingers are really long in general o.O

Um... ex-gay? My thoughts: repressed, experiencing a natural swing in overall preference that happens to coincide with decision to change, ridiculously in control of sexuality, not so absolutely gay to begin with or some combination, probably of the first two/last one.

Fingers: at a glance, my ring fingers seem to be at least half a joint-length longer than their respective index fingers. Maybe there's some truth to the testosterone thing in relation to fingers (seems far-fetched, but biology is pretty weird), but there being nice strong links to sexual-orientation there too? Colour me sceptical.

there was something about this on the L word, and i looked, both ring fingers are longer than my index.

i went around asking people at work, and one of the cheffs (male) said, look, im a lesbian, smell my fingers. (and game me his first 2) well, i stopped asking people at work after that.

Note that if you're male, you should be looking at your right hand; your left hand indicates your true significant other. For females, it's the opposite hands.

Well if this is true then it applies to me to but yeah I wouldn't believe it.
