View Full Version : Your Gay Hero

Only rule is he, or she, has to be gay.

Personally, Jim McGreevey is my gay hero. When he came out I was in Florida and all my friends were calling me like, "turn on CNN, NOW!" I think he's attactive too, in some wierd nerdy way.

Yes, I know, it's not supposed to be you're. I don't know what I was thinking.

Lance Bass.

Just kidding! I would say that my gay hero is Ellen DeGeneres--she decided to be herself and made a magnificent comeback. Plus, she's funny as hell.

Nationally:

I knew of him from such films as Independence Day, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Death to Smoochy, but I did not know the wisdom that is associated with my gay hero, Harvey Fierstein until I saw clips on You Tube of his commentaries produced for "In the Life", a public television magazine news show for the GLBT community.

Mr. Fierstein's directness inspires me. He talked about being a part of the community in one clip. He said that if you aren't doing anything actively in the community, you really aren't a part of the community, rather you are just a leech. His commentary reinforced the idea that see change that I had to seek change. Now, whenever GLBT-centered legislation is before the Congress or State Assembly, I am sure to correspond with my representative and let him/her know my thoughts.

Ellen DeGeneres (whoo!) or Jackie Warner (American lesbian owns her own gym and trains celebrities, she also has a TV show on Bravo)

I love Jackie, and that whole show. It broke my heart to hear about Doug, the trainer who died. He was my hero . Bless his heart.

I have a tie between Nathan Lane, and Elton John. Nathan Lane inspired my name for this site. My real name is Isaac and i think it is so cool to be in either one of their shoes. To be an actor or someone in music and not carewhat people think. Just do what you love infront of the whole world and be who you are is really cool!

Ian McKellan, and of course Oscar Wilde.

Them, and everyone whose fought for gay rights in times where it was dangerous to do so. Talking to some older gay men, it seems like we've come a helluva long way in a relatively small time.

David Bowie, Kurt Cobain and Billie Joe Armstrong. None of them are/were actually gay, but they all are/were bisexual, so that counts, right?

All great vocalists/lyricists, and not afraid to do whatever the hell they want and have their own opinions regardless of what people said or thought or did.

I would also have to agree with Freddie Mercury and Ian McKellen.

on topic: my gay hero would probably be lance bass mostly because he had to deal with all the media's interest with his sexual orientation.

Eventhough I'm a guy, it has to be Ellen DeGeneres :eusa_danc She's an awesome comedian, everything she says makes me laugh :roflmao: , no matter what it is. She came out and had a relationship which didn't end so well since her partner left her for a man, but she stood strong and kept going. Now she's got a comedian gig, a talk show, and a new partner, Portia de Rossi, who stands by her side. You're the best Ellen.

Mine would probably have to be Harvey Milk and Randy Shilts. Harvey Milk because he was a leading pioneer in the gay liberation movement and an inspiration to gay people everywhere that homosexuals could become something, and Randy Shilts because of his extensive work trying to bring the then primarily gay AIDS epidemic into the public eye.

Oh, and Oscar Wilde, just because he was hilarious and witty (and later imprisoned for his sexual orientation).

Yeah I know that feeling Ry, I definitely feel like that at the moment.
I would have to say my celeb would be Ian McKellen. He's a legend, and he's very outspoken, and really gives people like us the courage to come out.
If I was straight or a male I would so bang him:icon_redf lol

Portia DeRossi, not b/c she's a gay rights activist just b/c she's so normal, I think she's a great role model that you don't have to be flamboyant to be gay.
