Does anyone know of songs that are specifically gay-themed?

I know of Elton's Song by Elton John, and pretty much all Melissa Etheridge. Can anyone help me find some more?

There are these punk/garage band guys called the Pansy Division who have several CDs that are very gay-themed. Funny stuff, too.

If you have access to a local gay and lesbian bookstore, they are bound to carry queer artists' stuff. I can't really think of a lot of specifcally gay-themed music like there is fiction and other literature.

Someone else will probably have better ideas.

Rod Stewart - "The Killing of Georgie" (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/r/rod-stewart/117098.html).

Gloria Gaynor - "I am what I am" (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/g/gloria-gaynor/60852.html).

Joe Jackson - "Real Men" (http://www.guntheranderson.com/v/data/realmen.htm). Some of his other tracks can be taken in more than one way too.

A number of songs by Tom Robinson (including obviously "Glad To Be Gay"), Jimmy Somerville (such as "Aint Necessarily So" and "There's more to love than boy meats girl") and the Pet Shop Boys.

Passing mentions in "The Old Main Drag" by the Pogues (http://www.pogues.com/Releases/Lyrics/LPs/RumSodomy/MainDrag.html) and "Affirmation" by Savage Garden (http://www.allspirit.co.uk/affirmation.html).

Don Henley - "The Boys Of Summer" - maybe, maybe not.... (http://www.lyrics007.com/Ataris%20Lyrics/the%20boys%20of%20summer%20Lyrics.html)

Bay City Rollers - "Summerlove Sensation" - unintentionally I think (http://www.frmusique.ru/texts/v/vartan_sylvie/summerlovesensation.htm).

I'm sure I'll think of plenty more once I'be posted this!

Definitely check out this Wikipedia article on queercore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queercore). Lots of bands and record labels under the umbrella of rock (mostly on the punk side of things) are mentioned. It's also an interesting read in its own right about a segment of gay-themed music beyond the stereotypical pop acts.

And the traditional 'everything by bryan adams, backstreet boys, and basically any pop group of the late 90's' But that would be steretyping... i'm actually surprised that I don't see any input by popboy... :-)

other than that... Raining men?

from Aimee Mann's "It's Not":

People are tricky / You can't afford to show / Anything risky / Anything they don't know / The moment you try / Well kiss it goodbye

Those lyrics rang so true to me before I had come out. It's more a totally hopeless, depressing song than it is a gay song, I guess.

(I'll try to go easy on the Aimee Mann references, but when you're a fan, you're a fan.)

In fact I don't know any 'specifically gay-themed' song except for 'A little respect' by Erasure.
There are many songs that I would add to a sort of gay oriented song list though:
Everything by Pet Shop Boys (look for their greatest hits CD 'PopArt' at your local music store, it's a great album!).
Many songs by Erasure (A little respect, Who needs love like that, It doesn't have to be, Stop!, Chains of love...).
'Faith' and 'Freedom' by George Michael
'Affirmation' and 'Chained to you' by Savage Garden.
'Unlovable', 'Darkness' 'Void' and 'Feel' by Darren Hayes

Maybe I don't understand the lyrics so well... but that they sound gay to me ;)

There is a song by Roxette called 'Looking for Jane', that is sang by the female member of the duo, so that's technically a lesbian song ;)

Last night I was at my childhood best friend's apartment (he's gay, you know), we were bored and started to switch channels on the TV (our communication is not improving, I'm afraid there's no turning back... but this is not what this thread is about!). We ended up watching two documentaries on VH1: "totally gay". Interesting. Many gay artists and songs were mentioned.

I'd add the song "I'm too sexy" by Right said Fred, this is a totally gay song :P

I was listening to the "Laughter and Lust" CD by Joe Jackson earlier today. Unless "Jamie" can also be a female name, the track "Jamie G." sounds rather gay to me.... http://www.mondaypapers.com/laughterlust/jamieg.html

I've never heard the song so I couldn't give you my opinion but yeah... I've heard it as a name for women.

Tatu has gay themed songs...

"All the things she said" is lesbian based and "How soon is now" was done by a closeted homosexual by the name of Morrisey :)

Mindless Self-Indulgence (MSI) seems to be a pretty gay-themed band I like quite a bit. Their lead singer is apparently bisexual, though I don't know anything else about them. Their songs are each very different from each other and usually short with fast lyrics and the singer's 'specialty' of singing in falsetto. I find most of the songs catchy. "Faggot" is the first song of theirs I heard. Other good ones I'd recommend would be "I Hate Jimmy Page", "Cocaine and Toupées", "Bring the Pain" and "Daddy".

Some people might be offended by their lyrics, but I generally find them funny, interesting and energetic. Not all of their songs are gay, but I can't imagine straight guys listening to the 'straight' ones (such as 'Masturbates').

I dont really know of any songs with a gay theme. Most of the music I listen to is 60s-80 classic rock. But, when I first started to come out, I listened to The Who alot, and now whenever I hear a song by The Who I am reminded of being gay and what I went through (i really am not trying to make this sound sad).

You can hear "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" (sung by Emmylou Harris, music by Gustavo Santaolalla, lyrics by Bernie Taupin) from the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack on this site: http://www.xanga.com/gabriel_tao

Btw, I don't know who the blogging guy is. Just stumbled upon his site and the song.

Okay, some might argue with this, and it certainly is a straight-jock anthem, but I think that's only because they never really listened to the words. I've said this to some people, but no one believes me, but John Fogherty's "Centerfield" is 100% gay:

Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today!
We’re born again, there’s new grass on the field.
A-roundin’ third, and headed for home, it’s a brown-eyed handsome man;
Anyone can understand the way I feel.

Chorus:
Oh, put me in, coach - I’m ready to play today;
Put me in, coach - I’m ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be centerfield.

Well, I spent some time in the mudville nine, watchin’ it from the bench;
You know I took some lumps when the mighty casey struck out.
So say hey willie, tell ty cobb and joe dimaggio;
Don’t say "it ain’t so", you know the time is now.

Chorus

Yeah! I got it, I got it!

Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
You know I think it’s time to give this game a ride.
Just to hit the ball and touch ’em all - a moment in the sun;
(pop) it’s gone and you can tell that one goodbye!

Chorus
Chorus
Yeah!
___________________________________________
I mean come on, "We’re born again, there’s new grass on the field.
A-roundin’ third, and headed for home, it’s a brown-eyed handsome man;
Anyone can understand the way I feel." that's crazy!

Umm...i don't if these really count but some of the songs from the movie "CAMP" (in peticular "Where I Stand") could be inturpreted as gay...i dunno really what your looking for....gay artists or songs that scream ' this is a song for homosexuals '...lol... but also a funny song is " Keep It Gay" from the musical/movie "The Producers"...which was just newly released (2005)...

I just looked around this forum and I'm pretty shocked that in the Entertainment forum of a website that's desgined to help people come to terms with their sexuality that RENT hasn't been mentioned once!

I'll Cover You is one of my favourite songs! In the play it's a song between a cross-dressing young man, and a young gay man. (The song itself could just as easily be done by a woman and a man, tho) It's such a great song, so caring! I love RENT! Even aside from the fact that it deals with gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and cross-dressing, the music is phenomenal!!!

I don't know if anyone has said this one or not, but there is also Malchik Gay by t.A.T.u. which I find is quite good. I mean, it's not really like a gay love story or struggling with homosexuality...it's really just about a girl who's in love with a gay boy (aka malchik gei).

The Scissor Sisters are an amazing band. And while 3 of its 5 members are, in fact, gay, they don't like to be identified as a "gay band" so to speak. A lot of people, gay or straight, could relate to many of their songs, but there are some that do have very... gay... lyrics? :P

I think this belongs here. At our Christopher Street Day, Marla Glen gave a great performance and her new single is definitely supportive of gay rights.

Download any Scissor Sister song and you can probably find 'gay' connotations in them. They are an incredible group and just came out with a new cd Ta-dah! The two gay lyrical songs by them that come to mind are take your mama out and electrobix. Aside from the Scissor Sisters, one that hasn't been mentioned is Faces In The Hall by The Gym Class Heroes.

Thank God some one mentioned the Gay Pimp!!! I love him, he's really funny... Soccer practice is a great song, the video is hott too, check it out on youtube.com ... and try the Hazard's ... Gay Boyfriend ... pretty funny.
Also, they are a fairly new band called the scissor sisters, the lead singer is a gay ex go go dancer and four of the five band members are gay. Their like 'hit' song is filthy/gorgeous ... they have a few other good songs

Scissor Sisters are AMAZING. Ta-Dah makes for some excellent dancing music. I can usually get my friends to enjoy them as long as they don't pay attention to the lyrics (both [VERY]dirty and clever).

Now I've never been sure, but I thought at least one member of The Magnetic Fields was gay after i heard their song "I Though You Were My Boyfriend". Someone told me otherwise, but I swear I hear gay references in other songs of theirs too.

I don't know how many of you have ever read or seen the play (or movie) the Laramie Project, but as some of you know I am in college, and am a member of the GLASS orgaization. Yesterday we presented a dramatic reading of the Laramie project, for those of you who are not familiar with this play, it is about Matthew Shepard, who was murdered out in Laramie, WY. Two guys met him in a bar, and took to a remote area, beat him to death, and robbed him all because he was gay. The dramatic reading was power, we only did selections, because we held a panel discussion at my college on gay rights, the evening was very enjoyable. However, the reason that i am posting on this thread, is that the advisor for glass played a song during the pictures of matthew shepard and various pictures, the song is so powerful

Melissa Etheridge "Scarecrow"

This song brought the entire Glass group ... consisting of maybe 10 members ... completely to tears ... and many members of the audience members had a little tear in their eye...it was very powerful ... i can say that for once in my life i know i was in a room ... with str8 men ... where there is no hate ... it was an amazing feeling ...

No offence, Nacho, but this is just such a shallow and hackneyed selection of music you'd almost always hear at a gay club. Actually, one of the reasons I don't go to gay clubs is because I'm just so sick and tired of listening to the above listed songs... Whew... Sorry, people, but I just had to let it out... Would anyone here agree with me?

Darren Hayes had recently released his third solo album "This Delicate Thing We've Made" on August 21st. Do you remember the group Savage Garden from between 1997 and 2000? I am sure that you do, they were one of the most successful duos of the 1990's. They made us dance with, "Chick-a-Cherry-Cola," and made us fall in love over and over again with, "I Know I Loved You;" which was song at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The lead singer of that group, Darren Hayes, has had quite a successful solo career. He had hit NUMBER ONE several times in the UK, Japan, and of course his home Australia. During the first half of 2007, Darren performed songs from the new album in concerts around the world. Tickets for several of these much sought after shows sold out in less than ten minutes. In June 2007, Darren embarked on a small tour of USA and Canada, stopping in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Toronto. These shows all received rave reviews. AND his is 100% GAY he came out a few week before his new CD came out. (!) (!) BUY IT IN STORES NOW(!) (!) TRUST ME it is the one of the best albums of 2007

Just Looked Up Mann Gegen Mann Translation

Destiny smiled on me
and gave me a present
Threw me on a warm star [1]
So close to the skin, so far from the eye
I take my destiny in my own hands
My desire is manned

Where the fresh water dies
because it taints itself in salt
I keep the Little Prince in mind
A king without a queen
When a woman is mistaken about me
then the bright world is confused

Man against man
My skin belongs to the gentlemen
Man against man
Birds of a feather flock together
Man against man
I am the servant of two masters
Man against man
Birds of a feather flock together

I am the corner of all rooms
I am the shadow of all trees
No link is missing in my chain [2]
when lust pulls from behind
My family calls me a traitor [3]
I am the nightmare of all fathers

Man against man
My skin belongs to the gentlemen
Man against man
Birds of a feather flock together

Man against man
But my heart freezes on some days
Man against man
Cold tongues that beat there

Gay-ah [4]

I'm not interested in balance
The sun shines in my face
But my heart freezes on some days
Cold tongues that beat there

Gay-ah
Man gayfor man [5]

[1] "Warm" means the same as the English word "warm", but also is slang for "homosexual". Thus, the star is either warm or gay, or both.

[2] "Glied" can mean both "link" (of a chain) and "member" – that is, "penis".

[3] "Geschlecht" can mean many things: "sex", "gender", "family", "house", "generation", etc. It can also be short for "Geschlechtsteil" which means "genitals".

[4] The screaming ("Ah") has been combined with "Schwuler" to make "Schwulah". That, or it's similar to "playa" as opposed to "player", just changing the ending to sound "hip".
[5] Gegen and "gay gen" sound the same. The former means "against", the latter "gay for".

the beatles- you've got to hide your love away. The song is a reference to their manager who was gay, and at the time in britain homosexuality was illegal. the beatles were progressive :icon_bigg

Billy Brown by Mika...

Oh Billy Brown had led an ordinary Life
Two kids, a dog and a cautionary wife
While it was all going according to plan
Billy Brown fell in love with another man

i'm suprised all the smiths got a mention of was "How soon is now?". which i didnt find that gay,

anyone heard "handsome devil"?, one of the lines is, "and when we're in he scholarly room, who will swallow whom?"

you listen to most of the smith's songs and you can find gay themes,
"Is it really so strange?" features teh lines, "I can't help the way i feel, oh yes you can punch me, and u can bug me, and u can break my spine, but u won't change the way i feel, coz i love you, oh is it really so strange?"

oh and placebo anyone?
i hear gay themes in Commercial for Levi, the clouds will open for me, Nancy Boy, bubblegun, taste in men, hang onto your IQ and probably loads more,
for those who dont know, placebo is/was (the drummer has left now) composed of a straight drummer, a bi singer and a gay guitarist.
anywho, there's my contribution...
