View Full Version : How did you find Empty Closets?
Paul_UK
14th Apr 2006, 04:51 PM
A simple question - how did you find out about Empty Closets? Was it through a link on another site (which one), a search engine (what did you search for), a message from an 18+ forum that banned you, or what?
Also, which other sites etc did you go to before you came here?
And what would have made this site easier for you to find?
As you can guess, I am trying to find out what would be the best things to do to make it easier for those who may need this site to be able to find it.
Thanks!

I found it through JustUsBoys, but not terribly directly. I found JustUsBoys because I was looking for a friend of mine who had disappeared from the Internet and Google found him mentioned on JustUsBoys. I signed up for an account to search and interact with the JUB forums and then got a newsletter announcing Empty Closets, so that's when I decided to check it out.

I again found it when I stumbled across JUB, but I think it was someone mentioning it in one of the posts and so I came here to post rather than getting ejected from there.

I used to get into JUB every now and then, though I've never posted anything there. I still find that crowded forum kind of ...overwhelming. One day read something about EC there and I registered immediately! It was exactly what I was looking for then. I thank all the moderators for their work! Now that my "coming out" fears are happily over I still come back and read the new posts often :-)
I'm only browsing Spanish-language sites lately so I don't think I could be quite helpful about new ideas for promoting this forum. Most gay/lesbian oriented organizations, magazines, bars, etc. have websites with link sections. Blogs also. I'm only talking about Argentinian and other Latin American/Spanish sites...
By the way, there is even a "coming out" blog here in Argentina! http://mycomingout.blogspot.com/
Great idea :-)

I used a search engine looking for "coming out resources". I found several with coming out stories, even a good one in German.
A link to various reputable monthly online publications would be useful such as: MAgay or GAB Magazin, BOX ONLINE, Trevor Project, PFLAG, CSD sites.
I must say that I find the forum useful and there are some very astute observers in the group.:eusa_clap

For a while I used to browse the JUB forums, never posting. It was amazing to see that other gay people actually existed, and to see that many adults were going through the same things as me. I never posted there, feeling that it isn't right to post at a place I'm not even supposed to be at. I eventually found the thread that mentioned EC, and I was very thankful. Although JUB had good information and opinions, I always felt like I was intruding, so it was nice to find this place. It's also nice to have a site that's less porn-oriented.

Well - I was one of the people (at that other site) that kept agitating to get this place up and running.
Then I started posting here - and Paul_UK "assumed" I was a Mod here ('cos I am there) - then found I wasn't and talked me into it.
I tend to sit back and let the people who are more in touch with what is happening here (Paul & Dave) do most of the work tho'...

JUB, like so many people here. I was there for a couple hours, found a link to this place, and I doubt I'll be on there again soon. This place just seems way more inviting and open then JUB...

i also found it on JUB when i wasnt even looking
i was never banned, I just read it somewhere there.
But it wasnt for lack of trying! if googling "gay forum" had worked, i'd have found this place a lot sooner.
i was at one other place, never registered, it was a crappy site too.
THIS PLACE ROCKS!!
one question-- wheres the awesome pic that used to be on the splash page of the 2 guys holding hands?
i loved that pic!

There was an age thing on JUB few days ago and i said "dont you have to be 18 to use this site" and then few hours later i got a PM from someone telling me about this site, i signed up on here with my real age and then this morning i tried to log into JUB and i got banned because someone saw this profile. doh!

Yah, I noticed that when I signed up here, someone went and compared my info here and at JUB. My age was the same at both, I just didn't use my real birthday there. Interesting how they're checking things... Yeah, I used my same name, as well.
Don't worry, though. Ever since I found EC, I've just about abandoned my JUB account (mostly because this was the main thing i was looking for ;) ).

Well the two sites are run by the same people, and under 18s are not allowed at JUB for legal reasons, so this sort of checking is expected.

Oh yes - Welcome Gaz:smilewave.
And I'm sure it won't be a problem for you to re-register there again when you turn 18...and April isn't too far away (Come to that, Dave's 18th is even closer).
A pretty close eye is kept out for people "returning" tho' - we post notifications of anyone banned in the Mod Forum there - and I see frequent references to "wxyz banned - reincarnation of abcd, previously banned as underage".:icon_wink

Well...yes I suppose I am
Considering I'm not having any randoms, and only 2 members of my family...
Basically, it could have been 100+ people, but I wanted it to feel more social, and be a time where I'm just spending time with my close friends.

Oh please Dave, like it's anything to be ashamed of...i'm willing to bet before the year is over we will have at least 20 more people admit to being deflected from JUB. No money of course as the Canadian Dollar sucks about everywhere else. lol
I can vouch for 2 referals (not bragging just putting something in the post relating to the topic lol). Tis interesting though, how ashamed we are of something so human as desire for sexual release.

It was only to satisfy my mind knowing that there were people like me. I found a post of someone who got banned and directed here, so I clicked the link and... here I am. *waves*

It would be great if we came up on the first page (or even the second or third page) of Google when searching for "coming out" - that would certainly make it easier.
We do have the "sponsored link" on Google though (paid for by JUB, who also own EC), and the third link in the main search results is the Coming Out page on Wikipedia which has a link to here.

I googled 'gay support' and found it that way.
The majority of other sites were mainly dating services, or stupid links to porn sites. I think I went to about 4-5 other support websites, but I found that they were for men & there seemed to be very little information or support for women.
But then EC came up so I had a look. And I'm so glad that I did

Yeah... JUB, JUB, JUB.
I was looking for a Coming Out Forum on Google and Yahoo, but I never saw EC there; that would have helped a lot.
So, browsing Google for a forum, I came across JUB (first page), saw that homepage  , so I just browsed the forum a little bit, and saw (a sticky I think) a link to a thread about Empty Closets.
I came here, browsed the threads, and finally saw and Age that wasn't 61, 56, 48, 35, 24, or 18, 'cause those we're starting to get boring.
^^^ I think that was Dj (*hug*) ^^^
So, I joined, and now I'm here.

I don't really remember as it was many months ago. i beleive i was looking through gay websites for info to do a school project on gay marraige. then the teacher told me i couldn't do it on that but i kept looking through the gay sites being curious since i was still questioning my sexuality and was barely out at all. evantually i found this site, (and having quit the other support forums for mental disorders since they were too triggering, i wanted a better site to hang and help people) and i've been addicted ever since.

Plus I think its better to look at porn underage than going around having sex underage.

JustUsBoys - a gay forum and porn site for those aged 18+. The people that run JUB also run EC.

JUB is porn for 18+ and makes money.
EC is for all ages including under 18s (it's where people banned from JUB for being underage are referred) hence no porn, and doesn't make any money. It costs money (mostly for the Google advertising), which comes from the money JUB makes.

Paul, does that mean that if JUB decide that EC is a waste of time (although it isnt) and decide to take the money spent on EC for themselves that EC would be closed, or would the advertising just be taken away. Are there additional costs like hiring a server in order to have it on internet. I know I cant see this happening in the foreseeable future, I was just wondering
Paul_UK
6th Nov 2007, 11:19 AM
If the money became tight at JUB it would probably just be the advertising we would lose. In which case I would see what we can raise between some of us (those who are working and not skint) here to keep that going.
JUB have loads of servers and EC is on the same server as some of their other smaller domains (I think JUBsupport is on it for example), so hosting doesn't cost them anything. There is a $30/year licence/support payment for vBulletin which would be insignificant to their business.
If for any reason JUB decided not to run EC any more (extremely unlikely) I would do whatever I could to take it over. I would gladly pay for it if the other option was them closing it. I can't see that happening though.
I obviously don't know how they run their business, but I wouldn't be surprised if the costs are regarded as charitable donations which would save them paying tax on that part of the finances. Plus having the connection between EC and JUB known here would probably be regarded as keeping awareness of JUB once people here are old enough, which would help justify some of the costs. Also running this as a charitable thing is good for JUB's credibility.
Although he is busy with JUB, I know Seth is very enthusiastic about EC and is delighted that it is doing so well. So overall I am happy that EC is safe with JUB. :)

There are a lot of people out there who believe in the cause of EC and would be very willing to help out if we ever needed it. Fortunately that doesn't look like it will be the case, as the current owners are equally passionate about EC as we are!

Unfortunately by law (in the country where EC is hosted) anyone under 13 needs to have parental permission to access any social networking website. Since that is not going to happen at EC, it is set to decline anyone who enters a date of birth which makes them under 13. I wish we didn't have to do this, but sadly we do.
In practice I think these people will just enter a different date of birth which makes them appear old enough and will sign up. I am fairly sure at least three people have signed up at 12 and at least one at 11 by doing this. There are probably several more too. Indeed I "corrected" one person's date of birth for him when he reached 13.
If these people need EC, I and the mods have no intention of doing anything to detect or restrict access. We just conveniently don't notice or ignore it. ;)

I haven't actually looked at JUB. My friend from camp says he goes on there for support so I went on it. A popup or something like that showed saying that this sites only for 18+ and younger members should go to EC.
