View Full Version : Zune 2

Got one of those nifty little things for Christmas. Basically... another MP3 player. Kind of like an IPod but with differences here and there.
I got the 80G one. I like it so far. It held all my music with over half it's memory left so kudos to that!
I don't have to get ITunes. Nothing against those who use ITunes I mean hell it has to be good for so many to use it but I didn't really want it.
I like the headphones that come with but I also like that if I wanted I could use my old head phones if I wanted.
It can connect to others near by and send them songs or WiFi if you are going to the Starbucks (Which I will be seeing how I got the $25 gift card! I know... that will last me all of 3 drinks but STILL...) lol
My name on the zune is (Jerr was taken... so I did the next best thing) Jerr with a J.
I know... fantasticly creative! lol Also, if you add that to your name... chances are it isn't taken.
The first Zune was considered a slight failure... but the Zune 2 is suppose to knock IPod's monopoly of mp3 players. It is no where NEAR expected to be more popular or anything of that nature but the solid MUST HAVE IPOD will dwindle ever so slightly. (I know IPod will be the reigning kind of mp3 players for quite some time but this is suppose to take some of that edge off.)

^_^ Good choice. The Zune has far superior audio quality and features to most MP3 players on the market.
And the only reason Apple succeeds is because they are extremely good marketers. They way they market their products as 'hip' and 'cool' adds the stigmata of 'MUST BUY IPOD [foams at mouth]'
If my walkman phone ever dies I'm getting myself a Zune lol.

Yeah I ha an iPod-mini and then got the new zune after my iPod went through the washer:eusa_doh: :roflmao: . So far I have to say I love the zune a lot more!!!

I've had two phones go through the washer and dryer. However clean they may have been... I think the dryer messed them up. Blame the dryer...
I think I'll take A LOT better care of the zune.

Zune wont kill ipod. Thats just like how people said the PSP will kill the DS.
Psych!

I would've gotten a Zune earlier this year (around March), but it wasn't compatible with Mac, so I had to settle for the iPod.

[laughs] NO 3G FOR YOU!
^^; Seriously.. The iPhone has so many problems with it I'm waiting until one comes out which is both 3G and HSDPA compatible and has at least a 3.2MP camera.. And can record video.

^_^ iPhone killer.
So back on topic... The only thing inhibiting the Zune from dominating over the iPod is marketing and familiarity. MP3 players are practically referred to as 'iPods' by those not in the know about tech and immediately puts a stigmata on Apple.
If only Apple were to suffer a mysterious stock crash which would make them go bust...
The PSP 'killing' the DS is something COMPLETELY different. That was a war of innovation vs technological grunt. Innovation won out.
For this it's technological grunt vs stigmata.

3G is only for testra customers.
Telstra phails.
PSP vs DS isn't really different, brand new competitor comes in promising to deliver, and doesn't. (although I can't say the Zune doesn't, its brand new)

:P 3G is a global format. Here in Aus we have 3 or 4 3G providers. In other countries 3G is standard.
And HSDPA is like our NextG.
Anyway, like that it's similar, but the TYPES of things the competitor was promising to deliver were different. The PSP was a powerhouse, but the Zune is also shoving it in Apple's face that ti has superior audio quality.

I can't see how anyone would want Microsoft to beat out Apple, anyway. I mean, yes, they're both big corporations and people can be slavishly devoted to either, but at least Apple is innovative. I'm not sure if that's because Jobs is a futurist or just has good people working for him but Apple stuff has style, elegance, grace. Microsoft stuff just doesn't. Not to say Microsoft stuff doesn't work; I have 20 years of MS experience and writing this I'm running Windows on my iMac because I'm also going to be playing a game on it that won't run on Mac OS X.
But to me it's way more impressive that Apple has used the popularity of the iPod line to get first iTunes and now Safari onto huge numbers of Windows machines than it is when say Microsoft killed Netscape by bundling IE with all the Windows OSes.
Plus Microsoft is just evil. I like a lot of their stuff but their business practices (keyboards and mice, for instance) are so far beyond bullying it's pretty crazy. Not that Apple is saintly but they're a lot nicer player in the market than MS has ever been.

That is absolute BS and you know it.
The only reason that iTunes is popular now is because all iPods REQUIRE it to get music put on (not counting modding which your average person wouldn't do). Apple bundle iTunes with the iPods so I don't know how the hell that's different.
And Safari is bundled with Mac OSX!
And Safari is even slower than IE.. Amazingly.

Hahahaha. Epic winz.
Thats the same? Zune is saying its more powerful by audio. >_>
Well Zune doesn't have touch, nuff said!
I honestly can't STAND touch screens... fingerprints all over grimy ewwie grossness... I have issues enough with keeping a phone screen wiped... that isn't including the accidental this's and that's from rubbing the screen across my shirt or whatnot.
It has a touchpad type thing to control which you can actually turn off if you'd rather push it as a directional button.
Apple's shiny look makes people want to buy it along with all the hype. Even their new stuff that is coming out has a BIG focus on LOOK. Not saying the ipod isn't good but it wasn't for me. I like how I could send someone songs through my zune. I haven't because most my friends went off for their ipods asap. (They are slightly down because they want some of my music! *snicker*)
The Zune wasn't that bad priced either. 250-300 dollars for mine. I got the 80 G one... which is funny because I got the 80G PS3 as well. (Something about the 80...) lol well truth be told. the PS3 came with a deal if you bought that one (10 free blue ray/high def/regular dvds of your choice) and the Zune needed to have enough memory for my music. (I took up close to half of my space with the music I have now.)
I listen to ALL my music at one point or another so it was important I be able to get it all. Plus a video here in there would be fun. The sound quality is fantastic.
The place for you to plug your headphones in (This was a big thing for me) Isn't like IPod small... you can actually use different head phones if you want. The ones that come with are great and stay in my ear but I think I want to get some that rap around my ear. I had some but uh... car door said "No!" to the right one and it has a boo boo.... Accident I swears....
PSP vs DS...
Wasn't really a good idea but the PSP was GOOD in its own ways. Way better quality but it was pricey. The DS had the fun touch action which won more people over and the flow of games...
This isn't really the same fight at all as you are trying to compare to the zune and ipod...
price is about the same
sound quality better in zune
ipod now has the full touch. Which is fun. (yay fingerprints! *twitch*)
uh... what else... ones apple ones microsoft... (Shouldn't make a difference to you... if it does SHAME... that is like deciding on which person you like better in a dance off based on who their parents are! FOR SHAME HOMOGAY PEOPLE!)

ThatCrazyThang, I'm not doubting the easyness (is that even a word? lol) of modding iPods or using alternate software (I use iPod Linux on my old Mini) but think of the millions of people who own iPods - the majority are (sadly) going to be technologically incompetent and wouldn't want to use other products in case they blow up their computer or something (which isn't really possible but ah well). xP I totally see where you are coming from though.
But also, Apple makes it that you MUST get iTunes..
And no one is yet to answer me on this - Why is it that Microsoft gets tortured for including IE with Windows while Apple supplies Safari with Mac OS?
And as for the touchscreen thing, I like the idea and especially the way Apple uses it, but I WANT MY BUTTONS GOD DAMNIT! xP Plus multitouch just bumps up the price.. [headdesk] ..No matter how spiffy it is.
And Jerr, get the squishy sony headphones. x) I dunno why but I just have a thing about 'em.. Since I got a pair I've been kicking myself for not getting a pair earlier.
But yeah, essentially Apple isn't really 'innovating' anymore.. They're just being stylish. And iPhone was meant to reinvent the way we think about phones but I don't think it has. They've basically done what Sony Ericsson has been doing for years with their Walkman branded phones. =/
Like even the 4/8GB capacity isn't new... Sony Ericsson W950 has 4GB of memory and the W960 has 8GB. My W850 (along with quite a few others) support memory stick pro duo which goes up to 8GB currently, and will be 16GB by 2009 and 32GB by 2010. x)

Well I myself, don't care that microsoft bundle IE with windows, so that doesn't really effect me, i just happen to prefer safari for windows as it doesn't die for me like IE does
-.-
Also, you say about sony going to bump up their memory in their walkman phones, so will iPhone when they release iPhone 2 so im not sure where the argument is within that statement, forgive me if im wrong, but it sounded like you thought that apple will just leave their future iPhones with the same memory, which is a bit silly.
And how exactly does multi-touch up the price? Im also a bit confused about that statement too...
Ah yeah, and iphone does have ONE button =p.

Lol Safari for windows is even slower than IE... x) Firefox is still the best option in the browser war.
And I know Apple aren't going to leave the memory sitting where it is, but so long as there's removable flash memory it'll be one up on SSD based players.
The the price does get bumped up because the way apple need to produce their touchscreens is more expensive than traditional ones.
And the home button is... Meh. For typing stuff I prefer tactile buttons.

I want to know why they considered the Zune 1.0 a failure. I mean I've heard it was but I mean I'm only hearing good things about it. Is it a failure in the sense that it never made a big dent in the mp3 market?

Microsoft's styling and marketing was the only reasons why Zune 1 failed. Think about it.. Apple advertises a sleek sexy silver/black/white/bright coloured player while Microsoft advertised around the brown model.. Big mistake. xP

True. Brown goes with less things then black/silver/white/bright neon colors that scream look at me I have an IPod.

x) I've had my Sony Ericsson walkman PHONE drop on concrete numerous times, thrown it at people and even threw it at a wall (well more I slipped up and it flew out of my hands) and it still works fine.
And the new iPods (minus the touch of course) just have a cheapish feel to them.. Don't ask me why but I just look at it, touch it and just reckon they're more.. Blech. I like the Zune because it has sophistication like the Touch.

I've had a few iPods and then afterwards decided just to try out the Zune. I never really had any problem with the Zune for the months that i had it, it felt really safe and secure because I had dropped it a couple of times and never did it once hinder it's purpose. My previous iPod, I had accidentally dropped and it messed up some of the shell. IMO, the Zunes and iPods are both really good media players, it just depends which you like more simplicity or style.

The iPhone gets scratches on the back, but they just aren't as easy to receive. Which shows apple should have chosen that same material on the newest iPods, that would've shown better style, imo. The Zune have alot more style now, considering you can create your own original Zune for the same price as a regular one.

Ok I gotta say it...
I hate me some IPhone...
I thought when they referred to it as the "Jesus Phone" It would die.... but it is being quite persistent...
Yes it sounds AMAZING... until you find out the vast majority of the AMAZING things... screw you out of your warranty... the little fun stuff like having it be a NES thing... well some of those void your warranty... so be safe and just make calls... and view videos on youtube!
Plus... come on touch screen? blah between the oils of the face and the fingers and all that what not... it would drive me effen insane! I wouldn't be able to answer my phone on a particularly dirty day fearing I'd make the screen look bad.... how do you clean it? Windex? between oils on face and skin and natural dirt and such... blah! gah! ocd!
PLUS PLUS how could you NOT have bluetooth? Come on! Sign a contract for it! I could text all the ring tones I want to my friend with the blah phone but she cant use em. Sure you can use your itunes as ring tones! How amazing! Wait.... no... nvm. I thought it was. but when I can do the same thing on a website and have them text me the portion of MY song I chose for free.... yeah... and I can share those. What about your friends who chose against the Jesus phone? (as they should) You can't share the love with them. (Ring tone style) All you're left with is sex... and everyone knows that ring tones > sex. Especially when you don't want to have sex with the vast vast majority of the people you have ring tone relations with.

>_>; I prefer to call the iPhone a not-so-smart smartphone. The thing is just obscenely limited in its functions that it isn't funny. Complete waste of money. Get an N95 8GB, W960i, P1i or Blackjack which will beat the crap out of the iPhone. Mainly the W960.. It has a touchscreen AND buttons.
Though I can agree with what you say Jerr on the touchscreen matter. For me it isn't an issue because my fingers aren't real greasy and I carry my glasses cleaning cloth with me so I could wipe dust and smudges off with that.
