Alrighty, so two girls sang this song at my school today. It gave me chills, and touched me deeply. In all honesty, I liked them better than the original, but it's a very thought provoking song nonetheless.

It's a touching song, but I just can't justify the sole blame upon the president for the poverty that has always existed.

I do admit that George Bush seems to be a popular scapegoat. I mean, it's not like poverty didn't exist until he came along.

I love this song.....I love how it's not so much accusing as it is asking....why? It's very earnest.

I was SO shocked when I first heard this song, because it's so insanely political, and so anti-Bush, and so anti-war, and when it first came out, the whole "feeling" on Iraq hadn't turned against the Bush administration. I really admire P!nk for doing it--it totally changed my impression of her, although it turns out my impression was kinda incorrect to start with. For such a major artist to release a song like this... well it gave me some hope for America.

As for blaming him for poverty, while he may not have caused it, he's CERTAINLY worsened it and certainly done nothing in 7 years to reduce it. I'm pretty sure the gap between the rich and poor in the US in the last 7 years has grown even wider.

Plus he's totally tanked the US economy which will cause huge increases in poverty. Plus he's completely fucked over education with the whole "No Child Left Behind" initiative, which will directly impact US poverty in a very bad way.

The song is P!nk WITH the Indigo Girls, for those of you wanting to appreciate the very queer origins of it. Anyway, as a result of this song, I bought the CD it's on, and then proceeded to buy all the rest of her CDs. I like supporting people with convictions.

For such a major artist to release a song like this... well it gave me some hope for America.

I believe I read somewhere that she refused to make a music video of it to release it as a single, because she felt it was too personal and did not want to muddy its meaning by saturating it with commercial appeal/industrial exposure. :thumbsup: Pretty noble thing to do for an artist whose name sells so well.

P!nk is one of my heroines! Ever since her first album, she's been a non-conformist who speaks her own opinion and uses unflattering lyrics to convey the real message behind each song. If you liked "Dear Mr. President," make sure to listen to "Cuz I Can" (Track 7 on the same CD) because it works perfectly as a gay anthem (at least for me).
