There is no real way to know unless you ask him. I don't think tricking him into telling you is very good though. He isn't telling people for a reason, so putting pressure on him to tell you may cause problems for him later in life.

By all means ask him, but just settle for a no answer if that is what you get. Even if you're 101% sure he is gay.
