View Full Version : Glasses....omg

I used to have way better than 20/20 vision just last year, but now I'm having a lot of trouble seeing distance. I can't even squint (sp?) anymore to see things that are far off. So I have to go to the eye doctor, and I'm really afraid he's going to tell me I need glasses.

How did you guys who have glasses come to terms with having to wear them? Just get contacts?

There are pretty good glasses out there. You just have to take your time when looking. It really depends on the way your head in built as to what glasses will look best on you. I actually use to wear glasses and I didn't really mind because I could pick out glasses that looked good on me. Although I do have to say that I wear daliy contacts now and they work very well.

There are all types of cool frames out there. If you don't think glasses fit you, consider trying contacts. I wear contacts and would much rather have them than glasses.

I went through the same thing - I had great vision and then eventually needed glasses. I was really upset at first, but it turned out to be no big deal. I wore glasses for a few years and then tried contacts. Contacts are so much better. You get normal peripheral vision with them. Contacts are almost as good as normal vision. The only down side for me is that my eyes get dry if I have had them in for a long time - like 14+ hours.

I love my glasses and I think they look good on me. Only when playing sports or when it rains do I want contacts. :)

Pick out a cool frame, one that you're comfortable with, and wear it with pride. If you hate glasses completely, get contacts or surgery when you're older. Be careful with contacts though. They can do more harm then good.

IMHO, glasses are cute on most people if they've got nice frames, so I'm biased towards glasses.

Don't skimp on anything when buying glasses. Spending the extra money for unbreakable lens, antiglare, etc. will make wearing glasses way more tolerable.

I refused to wear glasses. I went straight for contact lenses.

With my head-like-a-bag-o'-hammers™ not a single set of frames in the whole of my home city looked good on me.

I have worn glasses since first grade, and as long as you have frames you like it usually doesn't matter that you're wearing them...eventually they just become an extension of your face. While contacts can be a good route too, especially if you break things easily, it may not be as viable a route if your vision problems are caused by astigmatism (the forming of a cone shape in your eye); my astigmatism made even the most flexible contacts unusable.

Besides, cool frames can make an outfit better and compliment your facial features, as well as other various fashion statements.

I've worn glasses for years. One thing is they protect your eyes when it's windy and dusty.
The other thing is that you can look very cool and intellectual. Bono looks pretty good with glasses.

Really? I have astigmatism and contacts work perfectly well for me.

Contacts are great, but having a pair of glasses that you don't mind is a plus, too. My suggestion? Use both! Get a pair of glasses with an invisible frame or a nearly invisible one so you won't "notice" it as much (or just any frame you like), AND get contacts. Wear the contacts 85% of the time, like when you're going out. Use the glasses on the weekends when you're too lazy to put in the contacts or if your eyes are sore (as mine often are, especially in the winter) and at night. They're also useful to have if you're rushed in the morning and don't have time to put in your contacts. It's essential to have a pair of glasses that you don't mind wearing, even if you're not crazy about them.

If you really want to "not notice" the contacts, there are pairs that you can apparently sleep in. Most pairs, even if they're soft (which 99% of all new ones are anymore, I think), they say not to sleep in them, but a few say you can. However, I don't think I would - at least for any extended period of time. Sleeping with your contacts in isn't so much the scratching and irritation of the eye that's a problem, nor is it really the gross and painful sensation that is peeling them off when you wake up - when you sleep with them in, you actually increase the risk of infection. So, I'm not really sure how the "sleep in them" contacts get around that, or if they do at all... but, if you want something that's a little more natural, I guess you can try those.

And last thing - make sure you buy a moisturizer bottle to carry around with you, because your eyes will get dry (especially at first). Try many different kinds of saline, moisturizer, and disinfectant, and see which one works best with your eyes - they are different. Some irritate mine worse than others.

And err... make sure your eye doctor doesn't cheat you. Mine tried to do that once...

Personal choice there really. Some people find glasses that look good on them, and add something to their looks. Others can't get used to wearing them at all and just go with contacts. Personally I have worn glasses most of my life. So I got used to wearing them when I was young.
But I also have contacts, and wear them quite often. There are certain times though that I am just more comfortable wearing glasses; cause the contacts after a long day sometimes bug my eyes, or I am working in an area at work that prohibits contacts.

So really it is up to you. Either one has its possatives and negatives.

I have had glasses for like forever....I just don't think I could stand putting contacts in my eyes. I don't mind glasses. You just get used to them and don't even notice them after awhile. Actually, I'm so used to them that it feels wrong to not have them on(just because of how it feels, not because of the lack of sight). My whole family(dad, mom, sister)have glasses, so its perfectly natural for me.

My parents own an optometrists (sp). Contacts from what I know are good, kinda pricey and more younger people choose them. I personally can't be bothered wearing them. Besides I love all the funky frames out there today.
I've been wearing glasses since I was about 6 so I'm used to them. I don't mind my contacts it's just I can't be bothered with them most days.
Don't freak out about stereotypes with glasses. Some people come to my parents shop just to buy glasses with plain lenses to look smart, so that's gotta be a pro =)

I've had both glasses and contacts over the years. I prefer glasses myself.

With glasses, you will end up cleaning them off several times a day. And you will get stuff on them, annoying you. And they suck in the rain. Ans you need to make sure you get comfortable frames.

With contacts, you'll have less annoyances, but they're more difficult to fix. Sometimes your contact can kinda scrunch up in your eye which is a very weird feeling and can be difficult to fix. Also, if you're out late, they'll dry out which is another weird feeling, and it feels like sandpaper when you take them out at this point. Also, they take a little more maintenance as far as cleaning goes. Also, you can't rub your eyes, which sucks when you're tired.

It's really a preference thing. I personally think glasses look good, and they're not as annoying as contacts.

I've recently got glasses, and Im fine with wearing them. I only need them for distance stuff (like cinemas) and television (cos I use subtitles and they get quite blurry for me)...I like my frames, but I only wear my glasses at work (cos I need them), watching movies/TV and when Im driving. When I go out partying, I dont wear them, cos, even thos I like them, i think I look better in photos without them

Anyway, getting glasses is not a big deal, just make sure you get frames that you feel comfortable in and you'll be set

I've worn glasses and contacts for years!!

Glasses are fashionable nowadays and it has been known for people to have plain glass as lenses just to get to wear glasses!

There are thousands of styles and you should be able to find a pair to suit you. You've had a few ideas from other posters ^^^.

Contact lenses are so comfy nowadays that you usually forget you've got them in. "Maintenance" costs are higher than glasses but you have to weigh up the pros and cons. Also, you may want to consider tinted lenses - the ones that change your eye colour - be daring!!

Personally, I wear contact lenses all the time but will wear my glasses when I can't be bothered to put my lenses in - weekends. When I bump into people who I see rarely, they don't even notice if I've got my glasses on. Glasses today are not a big deal any longer but I do understand your apprehension.

Good luck whatever you choose but do take your time. When/if you do get glasses, why don't you post a "with glasses" and "without glasses" photo and run a poll as to what we think? I bet everyone will say "cool" or similar!!

My story, maybe not many people experience dbefore

My eyes were killed by the Ultra Violet from the sun. When I was a little baby, everday, my parents brought me out to teh porch and let me lay on the chair and I just kept staring at teh sun, actually i didnt remember anythign, lierk when i was 1 year old.

One day, mom gave me soemthing, i couldnt reached my hand out to grab it, they brought me to teh hospital and that I was almosty blind, I got surgeries, 1 for each eye, noiw I got 1 scar on each eye.

So i wore glasses since then, liek almost 14 -15 years, argh i hate glasses

And now it's gettign worse , they said i may be BLIND when reach 40s:tears: :tears:

I need glasses for reading and using the computer. Someone above suggested not skimping on the quality of the lenses and I agree with that. Anti-glare coatings are worth having and do avoid some of the irritations of more basic lenses.

Because I only need to wear them at home and work, not when I'm out, I'm not so bothered about what they look like. They look OK but I would rather not have to wear them. I could probably get better frames, but I preferred to spend the extra on the lenses (which affect my use of them) rather than the frames (which only a few people will ever see and they don't care).

The whole idea of contacts is just too much messing around for my liking. I have never used then and with all the talk of dry eyes, moisturiser, peeling them off your eye (ouch!) and cleaning etc it just seems like far too much fuss. Also I suffer from hay fever in the spring and my eyes are quite sensitive to dust etc, so I don't think adding contacts to the mix will help!

The suggestion of getting glasses as well as contacts is good. For evenings and weekends, when you aren't going anywhere, it's easy to just put your glasses on. Also for when you are running late or your eyes are itching.

And don't ever ever! ever! If you get designer frames leave them alone for like 2 secs even. I took my frames off which were $350 off because i was playing jump rope (lol) so i leave to the locker room and then run back cu i left them and they're gone ><. So don't ever leave them outta sight. And ummm just put them on when you need them and thats it once your outside you can take them off and even when at home. I got use to them. And i was also worried like you more or so of getting that red mark on ur nose that shows you've been wearing glasses for like ever lol

I don't know how you treated your glasses but I don't clean mine more than once a week with solution. Occasionally there is this inconsiderate a**hole (sorry for the language) who touches my glasses with his/her filthy hands and then I have to clean them with my shirt (which is a bad habit) or bust out the solution.

They do suck in the rain. I wish we could use an Impervious charm on our glasses (HP reference) or something.

I would recommend getting silver or black glasses. They look good with everything.

If you want proof that the right glasses can look really good, see these photos:

Ah, thanks! I spent over two hours in one store looking for the perfect pair. :red: But it was worth it. So yeah, take your time picking them out.

You might be worried that your glasses will fall off easily, but unless you are a dancer or something, its actually difficult. Don't get tight glasses (I've got permanent indentations in my skull (not my skin, my actual bone) from wearing too small glasses while my face was growing). After getting glasses, get them adjusted to fit better. I would get glasses with nosepads since they don't leave marks/as deep of marks as ones without nosepads do, but thats more personal preference.
Also, the narrower the glasses, the easier it is to see over and under them. If your prescription makes it so you can see up close well with your glasses (so you never have to take them off), narrower frames take more getting used to. If when wearing your glasses you can only see far off and not up close then I would get narrower glasses. Experiment with how easy it is to look around your glasses.

Alright, semi-funny semi-strange story here. I wear my glasses nonstop. I only take them off to clean them, during martial arts class, to shower, and to sleep. They never are off 'just because'. That means some days I wear them for over 12 hours straight, and I take them off to shower and go straight to bed. My body is so used to the 'shower then fall asleep routine' once I take off my glasses, that when I feel lazy or don't need my glasses that day (like when I stay home and don't watch tv, go to the park, or stare outside) that I fall asleep. I once took off my glasses so I could mess with make up (ugh, I look horrid in it, for the record), read a book, then just mess around with my computer (I'm a geek :D ) that I fell asleep after thirty minutes (it takes thirty minutes for me to shower and get ready for bed). Everytime I take off my glasses, I fall asleep within 30 minutes-1 hour. Its annoying, I guess, but I usually don't face that problem. Has anyone else experienced it?

I prefer wider glasses. If I'm looking between papers on the desk and the computer screen, with larger glasses I just move my eyes but with narrow ones I needed to move my head. It's all personal preference, of course.

Seriously? I get so much dust and crap on my glasses I end up having to wipe them off (fog with breath, wipe with shirt) several times a day. Mind you, it probably doesn't help that I work in a coffee shop. Also, on a random note, windex + coffee filter is a good way to clean your glasses.

One last note: I found it weird getting used to going up steps when I first got my glasses. Dunno if that was just me or not.

I didn't really had problem with it as far as I can remember.

Although I broke quite few of them. I needed a pair of new glasses every 6 month because I broke them so often:lol:

I usually broke the frame. Being a 5th grader kid I didn't really know how to clean them or put them on desk or protect them when I play sports. Although I don't break any these days. I just become bored with them or the lenses gets too old for me.(I haven't broke a single pair of glasses for more than 3 years!!)

I do have contact lenses but I don't really use them these days. I just don't have time to wear them in the moring(my morning is a war) and my eyes gets really dry and you can't sleep with them on which was bit problem for me. But having no worries that they gonna break or distract you when you are playing sports was just great!!

Hope everything went alright:)

I've worn glasses since the 7th grade...

When I hit highschool I switched to contacts. In university, depending on how long I was going to be there, I would wear one or the other. When I started working though, the office was just too dry for my contacts and I bought glasses that I really liked. Some frames are more 'timeless' than others... really funky frames will get old fast, where as a quality, modern frame will last several years and always look good.

I had the frameless 'silowette' (sp?) frames which were a nice change, but they were just too fragile. I broke the clip on sunglasses. However, they were light as air, and hardly noticable, so you might look into those.

This time I bought heavier frames, and probably a little more 'edgy' - they are fcuk. I also got the daily wear contacts. At Costco they are $0.50 each, so it works out to be $1 per day. I don't wear them all the time, so that was perfect for me. If I'm going out to a bar or something, I'll wear contacts for a change.

So there are LOTS of options, and you don't need to look on it as a 'curse'. I'm sure you'll look good in them!

I had to start wearing glasses when I was 16, and was really nervous about it but only 1 person made fun of me for it. If you find the right glasses for you, they should suit you and people won't notice the difference. I wear contacts randomly throughout the week, but no one's ever questioned me on it, so I like to think they don't notice.

Yeah it's not a good idea to sleep with contacts on, I've done it a few times and although you can probably get away with it once or twice, it can damage them. Plus you'll end up waking in the middle of the night convinced you still have your contacts in, and desperately scratch at your eye trying to get them out (I've only done that twice.)

I had glasses for about seven years, but they scratched so easily and got bent so quickly that I switched to contacts after the second pair wore out. Now that there's no extra weight on my head and I have "normal" peripheral vision, I'm glad I made the switch. They were a little pricey, but worth it.

I don't really like the idea of me using contacts. Because, I really don't want to risk poking my eye really hard and go blind.

Ok, i don't know if this is too late but ill post it anyway.

Personally I don't need glasses but my mums an optician so I naturally know quite alot about them.

An easy way to tell if you need glasses, this isn't accurate, is to make a small hole in your hand with your fingers, place it over one eye and look throught it, if this makes it better then you do probably need glasses. If not I had a problem similar problem where I hada tiny spec of dirt under my eyelid which smudged my vision but once it was gone then my sight was perfect again. So it definately is worth going to the opticians about it incase it is dirt which can cause damage if left in there for too long.

If you do need glasses then there's absolutly nothing wrong with wearing glasses but if you really don't want to wear them you can allways wear contacts, however some people find these worse than glasses, If you do go for he contact lenses then mymum recomends daily ones, not the disposable as the cost soon racks up. However If you do decide to go for glasses, presuming you need anything, then apparently there are two 'in' styles either vary thin frames, or you can wear very chunky glasses. Looking at u'r face I'd actually say you're quite lucky in that either style will probably suit you so go for whichever you prefer.
