is lesbian a noun or an adjective?

on one of the forums somebody was saying that you are "lesbian" not "a lesbian"...

but on a CNN Obama interview he refered to "gays and lesbians".

this is totally me being picky about grammar and what not but can somebody clear it up??.....:icon_sad:

lesbos is an island that the greek poet sappho lived on. she was bisexual and a lot of her poems are about affairs with women. hence the name lesbian for chicks who dig chicks, and the use of the word "sappho" or "sapphic" to allude to lesbianism. :)

You can also use gay as a noun or adjective, although my impression (and opinion) is that it is generally considered more insulting when used as a noun. That being said, the most common time it gets used as a noun is in the PFLAG acronym: Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

That is, I would generally say "Danielle is a lesbian and Rodrigo is a gay man." It would be a lot more awkward to say "Latisha is a lesbian woman and Jason is a gay."
