It is extremely rare for a completely straight person to turn gay (just as it is for a completely gay person to turn straight). That doesn't happen normally. The only situations I can think of that cause it are when the brain undergoes severe trauma which deeply changes their personality, or when someone experiences strong side-effects from psychiatric medications.

More often, there are people who are gay and don't realize it yet. They thought they were straight for some time before discovering how much stronger their same-sex attractions were when they started to consider those a possibility.

There are also people who have some amount of fluidity in their attractions who can go from leaning straight to leaning gay during their lives, but beneath their current preference their biological orientation is bisexual, so they're never going from completely straight to completely gay. Sometimes they will identify as straight or gay when their preference leans in that direction (for whatever personal reasons) and it will appear as if they are shifting. But their orientation is not necessarily shifting. Just their preference.

There have been instances of fluid sexuality, in which there is a possibly permanent shift in sexuality not precipitated by an event such as trauma or reparative therapy (which doesn't work).

I believe gaytheist used to be straight.

But in general, its a problem of sexual repression rather than a true change.

To expand on my previous post:

Stroke Turns Man from Gay to Straight - YouTube
A stroke turns a 45-year old gay man straight, and changes his handedness.

Chris Birch, Welsh Man Who Claims Stroke 'Turned Him Gay,' Featured In New BBC Documentary
A stroke turns a 20-year old rugby player gay. The story about Chris Birch received a lot of media attention. Unfortunately he has been plagued with skepticism from the gay community since coming out.

I think the gay folks on Huffington post really are shooting themselves in the foot by attacking people like Chris Birch. It's pretty obvious the man has no shame whatsoever and really enjoys his new digs so why would he lie? Sexuality is a chemical process in the brain and things like strokes--which are known to cause massive personality changes in the patients that have them, could easily cross those wires.

i was straight all through high school. actually, i've never actually dated a girl. i don't consider myself a lesbian because i haven't completely closed guys off, it'd just take a hell of a guy for me to date one again. there wasn't a point where i was just like, "oh hey i like girls." i just kinda realized that i connect better with them and i don't get as easily annoyed.

At first I thought I liked girls but, my sexual attraction slowly shifted to the same sex.

I grew up the way society wanted me to grow up so I thought I had to like girls...so that was in my mind. Then hormones came along and everything went ary. But like some psychological shit for something like that happend to someone?...no I don't think so

There are literally weeks where I can be completely straight as in not having ANY attractions towards the same sex and strong attractions toward the opposite sex. Yet the same works backwards in which I can be completely gay, yet not flamboyantly gay. (I dont mind flamboyancy, but I don't find it attractive whatsoever.)

I was (well, identified as) completely straight until I turned 14 when I first started realizing that I was attracted to men. It wasn't until a few months ago that I realized I'm completely gay because I'm not turned on by any females outside of porn.

    No.

There are, as already been pointed out, people who are simply bisexual or who think they're straight before truly realizing their same-sex attractions.

    Incredibly unnecessary.

I dont know about turning gay, but someone can be so repressed that they never realise they are gay, then all of a sudden they finally see.

That happened to me. I was gay all along, society just twisted my head up so much I thought I was straight.

I personally don't believe you can change... I think that some straight people just try to ignore their feelings and emotions... but I don't think you can change how you feel.

"When 19-stone rugby player Chris Birch suffered a stroke during a freak training accident, his family feared it would be a life-changing injury.
Yet while his recovery certainly brought about a transformation, it seems to have been in a way no one could have expected.
For when he regained consciousness, the 26-year-old – who was engaged to his girlfriend – claimed he had become gay".

My brain told me I was straight, because people were supposed to be straight (as I saw it). I told myself I liked boys. I really thought I was straight. Gay or bi wasn't an option. But I wasn't straight and never will be.
