KTUV reported some majorly wrong information on Asiana flight 214. Instead of reporting the real names of the pilots, they reported racist names. Here are the names The best part is the apology that they issued. KTUV is saying that the NTSB confirmed the names to them. Here is the link to the full article.
Faith in Humanity: -15 I find REAL Asian names to be beautiful, it may just be me, but I find stuff like this a prime example of why people hate Merica. This is just so racist, I don't understand, how an 'apology' can just make it Go away. I saw this on Ifunny, but I assumed it was old.
In their apology, they are pretty much just blaming the NTSB for giving them the fake names. So, they are just trying to get themselves out of hot water.
We aren't over making fun of Chinese names as a society? Yeah it's sort of funny if you've had a few drinks, but it is seriously lowbrow humor considering it is at somebody's expense. Not to mention English names probably sound like barbaric gibberish to a native speaker over there.
I'm more laughing at the fact that this news station did not catch this pretty obvious error before it aired. I mean, it was pretty obvious..
I just realized it's also a script. "Captain, there's something wrong" "We're too low!" "Holy Fuck!" And then they crash.... yeah..
It's possible that this WASN'T obvious to the persons in charge of this newscast, which, if true, would be more sad than funny. @RSwordsman: Worse yet, the pilots are Korean, but the names given look more like romanizations of Chinese names (the last one especially is just purely insulting). To me, that's indicative of a lack of sensitivity of the person responsible toward the fact that China/Taiwan, Korea, and Japan have different languages and cultures. This seems to be a pervasive attitude even now, even among those who say they "love" Asian cultures.
... Am I the only one who's more bothered by the fact that the joke names are making fun of a plane crash that killed and injured people than the fact the said names are racist?
KTVU is the one of the local network news stations in the San Francisco area. They got the names confirmed by someone at the National Transportation Safety Board, apparently an intern there, who probably thought it was hilarious (and probably is without an internship now.) I, too, find it shocking that nobody in the news room, from the person making up the graphics to the person putting the data in the teleprompter the newscaster reads, to whomever else, didn't figure it out before it aired. That's some pretty sloppy workmanship.
It could have been a case of the Technical Director (the guy who pushes all the pretty lighted buttons) putting in the graphic, and then "secretly" telling the guy working the prompter about it, and the Director didn't know about it until he said "Take CG" and saw the screen. Or who knows? The Technical Director could have changed the prompter when the prompter operator was gone.
