I've been curious for awhile: If a thread is long, say over a page or a certain amount of replies, are you discouraged from posting in it? Some asking for advice are bound to be solved before reaching a full page. At points like those I feel my opinion wouldn't be worth a whole lot, or at least said by somebody else before I could get there. In chattier threads I don't care as much, but once it gets into the 3+ page range, I fear my answer will just get lost in the crowd. Whether or not it's true, it still really puts me off answering. anybody else feel this way?
Agreed. I'll usually read the one's that are multiple pages, but not usually reply. P. S. If this thread breaks 3 pages, that'll make it the most awesomely meta thing I've ever seen lol.
i'll read a popular thread but i won't contribute purely because chances are what i was going to say has already been said anyway
To be honest, I don't really care, I just want to voice my opinion, and even if little or no people see it, I got to vent in a reply.
Depending on the topic yes, if a thread seems long or if there is already a long running discussion between a few members then I will probably not post anything.
This. I know very people will read what I have to say, but I like just saying what I think on the subject anyway. Also, like Byron said, If I see a thread where its mostly just talk between a few peeps, I tend not to reply at all. I do this on all forums though, not just this one.
Depends on the topic and where the discussion is going. If most of what I'd say has been said, I won't post. If I have something to add, or a different view, I'll definitely post. The only thing I find a bit annoying is when people post answers/comments where they obviously haven't taken the time to read the thread (particularly any amplifications/clarifications the OP has posted), because those sorts of answers usually aren't much help.
I like to read all thread's... however there needs to be a minimum of 3 poster's beofre I post so that way I know which direction the topic is going in... It would suck to look at the pro's while others look at the con's... That dosen't sound fun. XD
When I first joined I was trying to boost my post count. Now I try to only post if I have something a bit different to say. Sorry if that was annoying.
If I see that it has a lot of posts and I'm not overly interested, then I won't post. If I am, I almost certainly will. In fact, if this thread had two or more pages, I don't think I would have posted, as what I'm saying is essentially meaningless/already said.
There's definitely an inverse relationship between the number of posts and my desire to post. Exceptions are WAYT? and the Pokemon thread .
I normally avoid posting if a thread is moribund and not very unique (where it would help to maintain continuity and not split up the topic among multiple threads). Also, I have my settings at 50 posts per page because I hate switching pages on threads, especially when posters are responding to posts on different pages. I don't care if my post gets a response as long as it, IMO, adds something to the discussion. Besides, every thread has more views than replies, so even if no one responds, chances are others are at least reading what you wrote.
If a topic sparks interest in me, I'll respond. Many times it's questions I never considered and trying to voice my opinion actually makes me form one. In the long run, I think it's painting a clearer picture for myself. That said, I think two or three page threads are the worst. That's when you are expected to read all posts, but often don't have time to. In those cases I sometimes don't respond.
This. There are a couple of threads that are easy to post in whenever, namely, most of the ones in Fun and Games, and Pokemon.
I usually read the OP's post and then respond, if it is only a page I read all the comments, but if there is more than one page I will just click reply. I don't really get discouraged, as long as it is still active.
