OK, here's a question for gay men, though anyone who identifies as male and is dating a male can answer, or who plans to date a male.

What do you call the guy you are dating?

I have trouble finding a good term.

Partner sounds too cold and businesslike, like we're members of a law firm.

Lover sounds too temporary. After you've gone out for a decade, the term seems more suited to an affair than a primary relationship.

Boyfriend sounds OK, though as if you're at some beginning stage, and as one gets older, it sounds a bit odd.

If you're married, you could use husband, or even souse, though even this seems kind of odd feeling to me, perhaps because of lack of examples in overall usage.

Thus, I've settled on mate. I like the connotation as in it being a male friend that one has fun with and shares a certain camaraderie, and also, as a furry, that you have sex with the reckless abandon of wild animals, as far removed from human guilt as possible, even if no offspring are being created.

So I call my 'partner' my mate, for lack of a better term.

So how about everyone else, whether you have a 'partner', or when you do, what will you refer to them as?

Not that I have or have ever had a partner, but I always say things like "I want a boyfriend", so I assume that if I ever get one then that's what I'll call him.

You get the creativity award

I think too, it can chnage over time, and depend on the situation. Though I do like puppy. How could I have overlooked that???

Thanks for the award lol, try to find something unique for your significant other. Maybe sunshine/sunrise? Make it unique, you love him or her like you love no-one else because there's only one of him/her.

Back when I was sleeping around, a guy I was seeing on a regular basis would be a 'friend'. If we were at the point of being exclusive, he would be a boyfriend. I think the first guy I lived with was also my boyfriend.

The relationship I'm currently in has lasted 16yrs. We are financially interdependent and are working on things like wills and owning property jointly and life insurance and such. I tend to call him my partner (doesnt sound cold at all to either of us) or sometimes my husband. He tend to introduce me as his other half.

At the end of the day, these things have a way of just evolving rather than being planned out.

  11. I would call him boyfriend, but also "babe" or "hun".

Relationship pre-DTR: "the guy I'm seeing" or "my date"
    Relationship post-DTR: Boyfriend
    If we marry: Husband

Boyfriend and Husband are direct parallels to Girlfriend and Wife. No other terms sound genuine to me, least of all partner. In my mind, the term evokes a law firm or business deal, not an everlasting love.

I put other because it depends on what he would want to be called, how far we are into the relationship, etc., if we ever got around to talking about it.

Plus, I'd probably call him a bunch of other terms of endearment. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

But seriously when I get one it would probably be boyfriend or by some sort of nick name, no nothing like pookie  probably more like stranger, or something different I don't know. Interesting topic though

Boyfriend, but we are 18 and 20. I think at some point (I mean at some age) we want to move to "partner" or "husband"...

The impossible boy. Because me getting a lover is impossible.

My emo comments aside, I'd just call them boyfriend :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Boyfriend. We're not married (obviously), we're not engaged (yet), but I do wear a promise ring...

I'll probably call him my boyfriend. "Partner" sounds like you're ashamed of it, "lover" sounds both temporary and outdated, and "mate" sounds too Australian.
