    Do you have Gay Pride?

As in, are you proud to be a part of the LGBT community? After accepting the inevitable at the age of 21 and admitting to myself that I am gay after having reached twenty-one, I became finally less scared of my sexuality. Whilst the word 'fag', something I used to hear a lot (and sometimes still do) at my own dinner table, scared me a lot, as of late has made me feel indignant.

I am not one of those in-your-face-I-liek-cock-and-I'm-proud-of-it, a stance adopted by a gay friend of mine, who reminds you and everyone else of his sexual orientation every single day. Rather it is a sense of dignity, endurance and pride. I am proud of who I am, and being gay is nothing to be ashamed of. But every-time I see people on television with signs of 'God hates fags' etc. I can't help a smirk pass by my face. I feel proud to be a part of the LGBT society and see those brave, brave people out there in distant countries fighting out there for their rights, or for the rights of their gay relatives or those people out there struggling to come to terms with their sexual orientation or gender identity. I'm so proud of all of you (*hug*)

    I'm gay.
    Everybody close to me knows.
    I don't give a rat's ass who else knows.
    I think I'm awesome.
And I think being gay is a large part of that awesomeness.

...so yeah, the gargoyle's got pride.

^ No, no. Nobody's inherently better than anyone else because of their sexual orientation. That's like saying a banana tastes better than a tomato because it's yellow and has more potassium.

And how are we more free? There are still areas around the globe that criminalize homosexuality. Look at Russia, the majority of Africa, and the Caribbean. If you don't think this also applies to the US, look at NYC, a good majority of the Southern states and Illinois, which can't seem to pass a no-brainer bill. SB10 should have passed in June, and yet we can't marry here in Illinois because there are politicians who want to legislate the Bible and won't ever stand for gay marriage. Chicago may be a more liberal area, but the crime rates are steaming high, and I don't think LGBT people are exempt from being victims, considering the many black churches that are staunchly against homosexuality, handing out bibles to every tourist whilst shouting into a microphone that echos through a bass amp on State Street. And then when we have Pride at the end of June? They cry out "Gay agenda".

As for me... Well.. Okay. I'm a human being. Sure, I guess I can be proud of it. But I know I've got my flaws just like any other human. Sexual orientation is just a part of being human. I'm not really proud about it, nor am I entirely ashamed. I'm a homosapien. Or homosexuapian.. ... yeah.

Right or wrong, I am not bound by the social rules of what it is to be male

I can dance with abandon. Dress nicely .. Appreciate art

I am free to be gay.. Free to be me..

Yes, such freedom comes at a cost

I don't have 'gay pride'. I feel like as much of an outsider in the gay community as I do in heteronormative society.

Ditto. I'm just weird in every which way possible, but that's why others close to me love me. Being different isn't neccesarily bad, you know. Just love yourself for who YOU are.

This is actually one of the advantages of not being straight. I totally agree with you regarding this. Straight people often have to repress parts of their personalities to fit the mold expected of them.

No. It would make my life a hell of a lot easier in more ways than one if I wasn't part of the community. Specifically, it would mean I wouldn't lay awake for hours on end at night utterly depressed because not only is my body physically wrong, I have no ability to fix it.

Honestly? I wish for the days before all this.

Okay, I understand what you mean. But how is that really relevant to sexual orientation? What you're describing is more of a gender thing.

What I'm asking is, while you're saying "I'm a human and I'm free to do what I want as a human" how is that saying "I'm proud to be gay"? Help me out here..

I don't at the moment... I hope I do soon though, as I begin to accept it.

There are certain societal expectations for straight people and how they should act regarding their gender expression. Such constraints don't usually apply to gay people.

Ah, okay. I never looked at it that way. Actually, I didn't realize that there wasn't a "norm" for gay people. I didn't think there was, but I didn't really realize that there wasn't before. Thanks.

Well, technically, there is sorta a "norm" for gay people in mainstream pop culture: Kurt from Glee for guys, and Ellen for girls. However. this doesn't affect gays as much traditional "male"/"female" gender stereotypes affect straight people.

I don't mean pride as in necessarily announcing it to the world by the way, either via a pride brooch / bracelet / other or verbally. It could also be inner pride.

Those are stereotypes, not norms. But I see what you mean. There isn't any drive for someone to kill you because you're not "gay enough" or you don't paint your nails enough because you're gay or whatever. Jack from Will and Grace might like to argue with us on that, though.
