Any of my fellow college football fans, as today is opening weekend, the stupid new "Targeting" rule has reared its ugly head again. Watch this video. Is this targeting? He lead with his shoulder, not the crown of his helmet. So now it's illegal to hit a receiver in the air, when BY RULE if the ball is tipped, it's LEGAL to hit a receiver, WHETHER OR NOT he has the ball. Because of this, that player was ejected from the game, and if that happened in the second half of the game, he would have to sit out the first half of the game next week. Football is a dangerous game by design and if you want to make it safe, play flag football. Back when I played football, which wasn't even that long ago, it took a real man to play football. You took a hit like a man, and you didn't get flagged for it unless it was blatantly late. Nowadays, if you even breathe on the QB, or the punter or the kicker, you get called for roughing the passer/kicker. The NCAA has turned football into a sport for pussies. So in conclusion, the NCAA can go fuck itself. Sincerely, AG
I can't see the video you posted because I'm on a mobile device currently, but my opinion on this issue is mixed. I feel like the NCAA should do a better job of protecting players and such, but also, they need to make sure they don't make it a non-contact sport. There's going to be some illegal hits that are legitimate mistakes, and some that are targeting. They should be able to review all targeting penalties before deciding to eject a player or not.
