"That's Gay"

I don't know if there is already a post about this but it got me thinking. Why do so many people say "that's gay", and from what I get out of it people are meaning gay and stupid and equvalent. I only remember this happening a few years back. What does everyone think of it when people use the phrase "that's gay"?

Because they think all the stuff they disagree with are bad and everthing bad is gay. Therefore, everything bad has a sexual orientation. LOL

Ooh, I thought about that the other day, too. It sort of bothers me a little bit when people say it, but I think that it's kind of . . . become independent of the actual meaning of the word "gay." If that makes sense. It isn't like when someone says it they're thinking about homosexuality - but yeah, it DOES sound like they mean gay is stupid. And it does bother me that the connection between these words is reinforced, but I don't think it's a terribly big deal. I'd like for it to stop, but it doesn't upset me enough to do anything about it, I guess.

I think some people really do think of it that gay is a bad thing, but most people only say it because everyone else does, and they don't mean it as an insult. All my friends say it, and usually i tell them off, cause it still hurts cause it feels like they mean it as an insult.

I don't hear it much (it's more of a teen thing, I think), but when I do, I counter it.

"I'm not going to the ice cream social. That sounds so gay."
"Really? How so? Are the cones being supplied by Abercrombie & Fitch?"

I actually say it myself. But I don't mean it in the way homosexual way. Gay takes on a whole new meaning when I use it.
I don't take it literally as a term just for homosexuals. Just like gay can mean happy? In a way?


It's hard to find that comfortability level with people, though. Such as me and my friends:
"That's gay." [Me].
"You're gay."
"I know!"

I don't care for people saying "That's gay". At the same time, I'm guilty of occasionally saying "That's retarded", which really isn't any better. I'm trying to replace it with "That's stupid", which I think is safe because no one still uses "stupid" in the medical sense.

I think maybe we should just replace "gay" with "straight".

I wouldnt worry too much about the connection until i start hearing "that's so straight!" meaning something good, or "that's so bi!" meaning something that's kinda good, and kinda bad

I say everything is so heterosexual if I do say it. Most of the time I just say things like, "I just don't want to go, doesn't seem like fun." :P

I hear it everyday from the jock people and it always makes me mad because like what was said earlier, it seems to equate gay with stupid ie: thats so stupid
Whenever I am talking to someone and they say it, I just tell them that thats really mean and then they never say it again...

I tend to have conversations along the lines of:

Other person: "Why are you reading that book? It's so gay."
Me: "Yes. The book is sexually attracted to other books of the same gender identity."
Other person: "...wha?"

People don't tend to use "gay" in that context around me anymore.

Well, I disagree with it and so do a number of my teachers.

Last year, during math class one of the dumb jock guys said "The distance formula is so gay". My teacher looked him dead in the face and replied "What, is it trying to penetrate you?"

So, when I hear that, I usually say something smart alecky back. "Like, omg, this desk is so gay" Me, "What, is it having sex with other desks of the same gender". People usually stop after that
