I'm sure that this thread must have been done before, but I'm going to do it anyway.

I wouldn't go out with a smoker, ever. Apart from my deep hatred of every aspect of tobacco, the stress of being in a long-term relationship with somebody dying of tobacco related illness would be too much. And smokers often smell absolutely disgusting, and many have tobacco caused problems such as terrible teeth. At most, I'd date a smoker who was actively trying to quit (though if he smokes at my current age, I'd probably not go near him).

So would you or would you not date a smoker? And why?

This has definitely encouraged me to quit. Even though I have always been a very light smoker (5 max a day), I do see that the stigmatisation has been quite successful and it's hard to be found attractive if you're a smoker.

Plus there's all the health benefits of quitting etc. etc.

While I would have in the past, I am beginning to think that I probably wouldn't. Should I successfully quit, I wouldn't want to go back to smoking because I was dating a smoker.

    Nope-dy-nope.

Good on you! It'll probably be easier, you being a light smoker, to quit.

I'd prefer a non-smoker over a smoker because of all of the health issues and stuff like that, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't date one!

(I never smoked before, and I'm not planning on doing it anytime soon, but I like the smell of it for some reason.)

Sorry but no. I can be staring at a hot guy for ages then as soon as he pulls out a cigarette my attraction is just gone. Major turn off. In fact, I find it difficult to even be friendly with smokers. I know that sounds awful but it's just not a nice smell to be around. It only works if I know them quite well before I find out they smoke. But I would never, ever date a smoker.

Makes no difference to me. My best mate smokes, and the last few guys i kissed all smoke. Its irrelevant to me tbh.

I would prefer not, but if it is necessary I wouldn't mind.

I'm really against smoking since I have seen members of my family die due to the effects of smoking.
I also know how it has affected my parent's relationship and was one of the finicky reasons as to why they got divorced.
I wouldn't date a smoker but if I really liked him/her, I would try my best to encourage them to give up .

No unless i find out about it like midway through the relationship.. I'd feel bad dumping someone for that reason. I'll just not date em so i don't have to dump em

I should also justify my hatred of smoking by pointing out that I never met one of my grandfathers because he died of smoking related illnesses at age 40.

only online  not in real life.
I have tried once. While kissing him, I could tell in the evening if he had one in the morning. It was like kissing an ashtray.

No. One of the few reasons I would not consider a date with someone.

Same here. It's a horrible habit that in this day and age I won't support. I'll be friendly to smokers, but if they're friends they wisely know not to do it in my presence. If you're trying to stop and want to date then I'll befriend you; but I won't date you until I know you've stopped for good.

Same here. I've lost 3 grandparents to lung cancer myself, and can count a good 10 other close relatives who died from smoking related deaths. Watching my Grandmother and countless marriages go through that trauma was enough to make me vow never to experience such a pointless death with my spouse.

    On 2 conditions:
They don't smoke near me. (Also clean the smell from their person)
They make a serious effort to quit smoking.

I've been told by many people that kissing a smoker is like licking an ashtray. My (female) friend's ex-boyfriend who smoked two packs a day always had to carry a roll of breath mints, which ended badly once. He once ate an entire roll during a day, and those things are flavored with Sorbitol, which serves as a laxative. He was uncontrollable.
