From my experience at college LGBT groups at least, it seems like women (that is Lesbians and Bisexual females) make the majority and do most of the outreach. Do you notice this in your areas? Or do you have a different experience?
At my school's own GSA, it was pretty mixed. If the women had a numerical advantage, it was because we had more female straight allies than male straight allies. But if we're talking about the larger LGBT-rights movement, I would say queer women are definitely less prominently represented in than queer men. (Or should I say, gay men, because as far as representation goes, bisexuals of all sexes seem to be tertiary to both lesbians woman and gay men.)
My experience with Lesbians are rather mixed, I only met one and the rest of the women I met were either Bi (some have a leaning, other's don't) or predominately Straight?
In my local area the LGBT groups seem to be dominated by gay men. I have joined a local Gay Book Group, which I'm really enjoying because it allows me to spend time with other gay people and the members (mainly gay men with a few lesbians) are lovely but the ratio of gay men to lesbians does skew the book topics somewhat.
That's true, never thought of the female straight allies (that would bring the number of women up in those situations). I agree bi people are definitely underrepresented in the LGBT movement. ---------- Post added 24th Sep 2013 at 06:15 PM ---------- That sounds really fun! ^_^ Too bad about topics being skewed to men though. ---------- Post added 24th Sep 2013 at 06:18 PM ---------- So far that seems to be the theme in this thread.
