Default The end of the internet as we know it.

Well the title was a liittle over the top but,

According to these people the internet is supposedly going to be replaced with a
cable-like subscribtion plan which only lets you access a few sites and the more you pay the more sites you get(Just like channels) Kind of like this:

And that the ISP's all over the world are talking about changing to this new plan.

And its happening in the year 2012*Rolls eyes*

_______________

I don't think it will ever happen though it kinda defeats the purpose of things like google and would be a major step back. Although it would make more money for the big companies, the smaller sites like EC would most likely not exist

Source: http://ipower.ning.com/netneutrality

Discuss - Do you think it will happen?
- How my ISP can shove it up thier arse if it does.

I seriously doubt that would happen. It'd be a huge leap backward.

If that happens, the biggest display of nerd-rage you've ever seen will ensue, I can't see it lasting for very long without a huuuge public outcry.

Yes, I was just going to say that. The amount of backlash from the public would stop this from ever going ahead....and anyway, isn't the internet just a huge networks of networks, meaning that if all the nerds worked together, they could recreate it? I dunno, I just can't see this happening

Oh i see that makes so much sense, here i was thinking it was something you could just dump something on. I thought it was a big truck. LOL

I remember seeing that image on digg several months ago. I believe that it a parody designed to make the lay person more aware of the issue of net neutrality. However, it would not the subscriber that would be paying more, it would the sites that have to pay more. If a site didnt pay the additional fees on top off what they are already paying then they would be in the slow lane. If some1 tried to access that site they would have difficulty where if the tried to access the site for at&t, comcast, verizon, telstra or whatever your ISP it would load very quickly. This Video is a bit dated but explains it all

On a side note here in Australian there is a giant threat to the internet. The Australian Government wants to the censor the internet. The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Stephen Conroy has been quite coy not giving out many details about the plan. Personally im very concerned that EC would become one of the sites blocked. $32.5 million was allocated to this plan in the last federal budget. If want to more about it i would suggest that you look at site.

Or a series of noobs.
Or a series of boobs, given how much porn is out there.
I could go on like this for some time...

This has to be a joke, but if it ever happens...

I'm sure the whole nerd/internet-enthusiast population will rebel or riot or do anything and everything they can in order to stop this madness! I mean really, paying for sites you wanna access, this crazy!

O.O

oooh, i thought it was info-red molicules in space that can be downloaded and uploaded and when u save or post info on the web it goes back to space cuz space is never ending so it's huge to hold internet memory....

I mean...sometimes, info u place on the web dissapair; i alays thought that the martions from mars were risponsible for that. they stole the information from space so they could learn more about us....u know what i mean?

"They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the Internet. And again, the Internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material..."
See, and when one of the tubes leaks, some internets escape and the information is lost.

And yes Ty, I'm glad I beat you to it

I hear everyone saying "This will never happen! The nerds/geeks will riot and protest!"

What will all of us do? Really? There isn't much you can do except make your politicians aware that you are against this and why it is bad.

It would be nice to just switch ISPs but all of the little guys are buying bandwidth from the major telcos so switching is futile.

It isn't so much that we, the consumer will be paying to view websites or services we want. It would be up to the content providers (the youtubes, myspaces, ebays, googles, etc) to pay a premium to prioritize their traffic over everyone elses. This will squash out all the little guys, the non-profits, the independents or anyone else who can't pay the premium. All of their traffic will be much slower.

What's worse is that all these content providers (EC included) are already pay their ISPs money to keep their websites and services running. The more traffic/data flow a content provider needs, the more money they pay. That's fine but now the major ISPs want the content providers to pay even more just to ensure that it arrives on the other end quickly.

The major telcos knew how much data throughput their infrastructure could handle but they oversold it anyway. They sold all of us home users nice fat broadband pipes that could handle 5 mbps but they never expected any of us would ever need or use that much. Now comes a day when downloading and streaming audio and video are the norm and suddenly the telcos have their balls twisted because they can't deliver what they sold us and now they want to charge more money to dig themselves out of the hole they've created.

Well, the Internet Protocol isn't going to go anywhere. So with a few interconnected servers (likely taken from "free everything" foundations) we could start a new Internet a la Arpanet. With current technology, this new Internet would be somewhat limited at first but after a while it would be a replacement of the current one.
