A friend of mine listens to music when she is writing. She says it helps her get in the mood and even get ideas. Hope this helps!
I find I write better when it's not the only thing I've got to get done. And deadlines. Even self-imposed, busting my ass to meet them churns out results. Also- if you go for outlines, make one.
Put anything down that immediately comes to mind, be profligate and generous with whatever you're thinking, don't edit at that point, just write and write until you can't... the more material you have the more you have something to occupy your mind, and the more decisions you will have to make about what to keep and what to discard.
For me, music is definitely a bad idea because it is too distracting. Normally I need to be in a quiet area, with few people and just get into a hyperfocus mode where I start typing a few things. Eventually, the words start slowly coming out. If you have a specific topic, try to write an outline of ideas and then flesh them out. Try to get at least 3-5 sentences per paragraph.
Turn off the internet connection. It usually works for me XD. Depending on how much you have written already, it also helps me to read a few pages or so before the "frontier" of the story to help get you in the groove. If you like the way it's going, you're more inclined to continue it rather than picking up straight where you left off. ^^I might be entirely off-base though if fiction writing is not what you're talking about. Is this a writing project for school, or for fun/commission?
