Would you mention your partners gender in a love song? Steve grand was the first person to do that, I think, and he got quite notorious for it.

Personally, If I decided to pursue a career in music, I wouldn't do it at first. I would like to be an interpreter of old jazz music, and in my first albums sing songs that are gender neutral. After having some publicity, and perhaps some underground success, I would release an album featuring some songs that are traditionally sung by women, because they refer to a man. The man I love, cry me a river, can't we be friends, my human is gone now, etc, this effectively coming out without having to write lyrics at all loll.

    Yah, totally.
Ideally, I'd be in a metal band of some sort, so I could easily get away with it.

I totally would. And then we'd make adorable music videos together like the video for "She Keeps Me Warm". (I know that wasn't Mary Lambert's actual partner in the video; I'm just citing it as a good example of a cute music video with same-sex romance.)

I think it would depend on the song and the story of it, but probably.

Definitely. If you they don't like it, then they don't have to listen.

I doubt I'd write love songs. Not really my thing. But yes, I would mention my partners gender in a song.

Joan Armatrading never mentions either gender in the majority of her songs - (The Weakness in Me - 'I have a lover, who loves me' etc).

The Presets (Aussie duo, both are gay) have used 'boy' instead of where you would expect 'girl' in a few of their songs.

If I was a singer, I would totally refer to guys  Unless it was a cover, then I would probably keep the lyrics as is.

Our own Montreal-based Rufus Wainwright started his musical career openly gay, and he was quite militant about it (which at the time was a bit more difficult than now). If I recall correctly, his manager did not dissuade him from being so, but he also counselled him not to bring it up every time he interacted with people.

I still don't know of any song where he uses the personal pronoun in a love song, but everyone who knows who he is knows what he's talking about when he sings them.

I don't usually like celebrity gossip but I read an article saying that Jessie J is a in essence a lesbian but was encouraged by agents to state publicly that she is bisexual because it would be more popular with the public and wouldn't alienate straight viewers/listeners/fans as much. I don't know what the truth in it is but it does bring up some thoughts:

How accepting / aware of Jessie J's acknowledged bisexuality are general public fans?

Would those who buy/enjoy her music not do so if she were out as a lesbian?

What makes bisexuality more acceptable in agents/media's eyes than lesbian/gay sexuality?

Would a male music artist out as bisexual face more difficulties than a female artist out as bisexual?

Depends, really. I probably wouldn't so I could connect with more people with my songs. However, I would make a few songs referencing my partner's gender.

It wouldn't be an issue at all. I've played a lesbian onstage before, and had no qualms about publicly kissing a girl (she was super cute anyway. ). If I were with a girl and I loved her, I would totally want it public. I would sing what I liked, and people could say what they wanted.

Yes. If I loved them and felt I had a future with them. The thing with songs is, they tend to never go away. So if I felt strongly about that guy, then yes I would include them in my song(s). I don't like to lie about anything, so if I was a professional singer/whatever, I'd be openly gay. If people don't like it, there are tons of other music singers for them to listen to.
