Default Old Man Left For Dead

Check this link... its the shocking reality of Bystander Apathy.

http://news.aol.com/story/_a/bystand...295x1200131069

Do you think people would act this way in your town?
How would you react?

I am a lifeguard, so I since I know what to do in situations like this, I'd like to think I would be there helping him in seconds. Like the first person I saved in the pool was kinda scary, I didnt know if I was doing everything right... but like... At least I tried.

Hmmm, it's hard to tell what really happens with videos like this. I'd like to believe that those people who stood watching actually phoned an ambulance (which i'm guessing they did judging from the police car that arrives at the end) and didn't actually want to move him incase they did more damage. I can't really blame them for not actually going to move him or anything as if none of them know what they are doing then there is the risk they will do more damage. I wouldn't have been able to go near because the sight of blood makes me feel faint. >.< I would have definetly phoned an ambulance but i wouldn't have gone up and moved him about, and i would be concerned if people who didn't know what they were doing also went up and did that.

It looks bad in the video, but it's easy for us to point that out from behind our computers. If we were in that scenario and we didn't know any first aid then i doubt we would go up and help him. The only thing i could do to help him would be to alert emergency services. If everybody was taught basic first aid skills then maybe the response would be a lot better rather than just having people gawping at him, but whilst they are unaware how to help I think they did all they could (unless somebody there did know how to help and chose not to, then they're just mean).

wow. How can people see someone like that and keep walking? I hope people in my town would'nt act this way. If it were me who walked by I would have called 911.

Well, yes its good not to move somebody in this situation but he could have easily been ran over again. Pretty sad.

wow, i mean Jamaica is bad as it is but this is one thing i give credit for the Jamaican poeple.

and as serious as this is i am

ok, here...if someone gets hit off a BYCICLE, road block, traffic JAM because it's going to cause a huge commotion and lots of poeople are going to stop for help. sometimes i am on the highway and see the HIGHWAY which was built to manover traffic, HAVE traffic and it' because someone got a flat tire
now u got like 8 people at once stopping to assist, with a flat tire and let me not menation if it were an animal in the road.

I voted i wasn't really shocked; because idk much about americans or america. but i have been to school there before (so i have an idea of the cultutre) and i can tell u this much. if something as simple as a fight between 2 people break out there are ether 2 circumstances.

1. the rest of the kids will jeer it on
or
2. all the boys will sit and watch while the girls panic and scream in histeria

and it's funny how where i am from, when there is a fight with 2 people it's always 3 persons who gets hurt cuz someone always go to part it and that referee always gets the worst damage

absaloutly so, I think the way this situation should have been handled is to go see if he was dead while someone go and direct the traffic around him...making sure it's not a dog that got hit down in the road

A human being deserves more respect than to be left out in the middle of the street like that. There should have been people running to his aid the moment they saw him there! And I don't buy that explanation of being too afraid to help him. Too afraid to save someone's life? Too afraid to make a thirty second phone call?! If someone needs help, you help them...because some day it could be you lying in that street, you know?

In a situation like that, people should ring an ambulance, and block traffic on the road. It is also good to try and check his vitals if you're ringing an ambulance. Take off your coat and cover him in it if the ambulance is going to take a while...

There are hundreds of things you can do.

There is a similar case - that of Kitty Genovese - it is probably the most famous example of Bystander Apathy.

Heres the story.

Ah, well, the paparazzi weren't at all apathetic. They just didn't help.

Pretty dramatic footage for sure. And then you have to go on the narrative to understand that nobody helped or called 911. Police arrived as a result of another call they received...

I can't imagine this happening here in Toronto or in the Toronto area. Someone would stop. Someone would have at least stood with him. And there are enough people with cell phones that someone would have called 911. I'm sure of that.

I called 911 once when I was much younger - it turned out that the guy was a drunk and was 'known' by the police and ambulance - but I didn't know that until they arrived at the scene. My friend and I waited with him until the ambulance arrived.
