Vegemite?

Discussion in 'Chit Chat' started by anthonythegamer, Nov 17, 2013.

  1. For all you Aussies out there, I'm sure you guys are very familiar with Vegemite. I've seen many videos on YouTube of people using vegemite in cooking, and people eating it straight out of the jar, most of the time upchucking it.

I'm planning to buy a 400g jar of vegemite or a tube of vegemite sometime this week or next week. Aussies, please guide me on how to eat it. I do have cousins in Parramatta, Sydney, but knowing them, they'd trick me. Also, could anybody tell where I could buy vegemite in the U.S? Trader Joe's has some weird stuff, so do they have it there?

This thread prompted me to look it up. It's interesting.

The only time I've eaten it was as a sandwich - just the bread, and I believe some butter, then the vegemite.

Just the one time, but I liked it.

I'd also be interested in the answer to this question.

Vegemite is weak, Marmite is where it's at.

Most people eat it on bread, usually with butter/margarine
I have eaten it buy itself, though I usually have it on bread without butter though

I've always been confused by this stuff. I assumed it was a vegan version of marmite, but I checked marmite, and that is vegan.

Vegemite is just the Australian version of Marmite (Vegemite is now a Kraft/Monsanto product now, so it's American).

It has to be eaten sparingly and spread on something. It's extraordinarily salty, and tastes awful to most foreigners. Just have it on toast with a spread underneath and Vegemite on top. Do not eat it out of the jar in large amounts as a challenge; it has serious health risks associated.

It's also good for mouth ulcers. Just put some Vegemite on your finger, rub it on the ulcer, and it'll go within minutes. I get ulcers from citrus, and Vegemite is the best cure. I'm allergic to barley now, so I can't have it.

They taste different though. Vegemite tastes like Marmite mixed with dirt. (Which is impressive, considering Marmite already tastes like licking a road.)

  10. is it just like marmite?

put some butter on bread then put a thin layer of vegemite on then omnom.

orrr you can use cream cheese or chedder cheese aswell in sandwhiches with it.

i only know sandwhiches with it, well marmite.. but its the same thing

What fascinates me about this stuff is that:

    1) someone had to invent it

    2) someone had to taste it for the first time

    3) someone had to like it

    4) someone had to like it enough to take the risk of putting it on the market

Who says there's no accounting (accountability?) for taste??

Marmite is the most wonderful thing ever created, in terms of savory bread spreads. I mean, come on. So good. I love it so much, I eat Marmite Xtra Old.

Tried vegemite (met some Australians who had their obligatory supply while travelling)...

I'll stick with peanut butter, thanks (it sticks to me too!)

  17. For all the "yanks" (Americans) out there, do you guys know where I could buy it?
