Here’s a little poem I wrote, for all the people who are less fortunate than us on this day of thanks. As you sit round the table Passing the tremendous tryptophan filled turkey The drowning boat of gravy and cranberry sauce Thanking each other for yourselves Being thankful for the opportunity to gorge yourselves Remember those who’ve been brought down to reality The politician that lies to fill his empty soul The poet that suffers in the gutters Just to write a few lines no one will ever read Just so he can have a few bucks and buy a lump of coal The child worker who’s told to go home and play In an empty house with a dead mother and starving siblings Who’s more of a human than anyone on Earth Where have you been, Black Friday deals? Waiting in the cold, for the hour that is left to us Dearest fair Wal-Mart, our home Bastion of our way of life; Of our ignorance There were 10,000 people, waiting in silence Let them wait in the shadows rather than enter the light Before you bestow your hopes and blessings tonight Remember the one person who starves and the many who are laughing Our Lady of Costco sure is great Calm, collected, sure and overweight She’s our lost lady, our fallen angel from Heaven In a white leotard waiting in the parking lot. She’s the queen of the mall, the valkyrie virgin Our Nibelungen sister, with double chinned jowls This is the legacy we leave the future generations I hear the roar of the people shouting in revolt I hear the shots of the protesters dying I hear the sounds of 10,000 people whispering This is our sacred purgatorial inheritance We are Dante’s poor lost souls With suffering all around us We shine in brightness and we can’t even see the light The hunger is ugly but the soul is forgotten Our sinful acts and deeds are oblivious to us Remember these poor souls with nothing When you ask someone to pass you the stuffing. --- I’d like to postface that I’m not against Thanksgiving. On the contrary, I love it. I just want people to remember those who are less fortunate than us.
Yes, we have lot to be thankful for. Some here won't be having a great Thanksgiving because of personal circumstances. Others never have a great Thanksgiving, because they don't have adequate access to shelter, decent clothing, and care.
