So, my plane just landed in New Jersey. I'm moving to Belleville from Ireland and it's my first time living in the US. Any American lads out there that can give me some advice? Really scared about my accent. Mum's always told me I've got a strong Irish accent (since me and my friends speak Irish to each other, it's integrated into my daily life) and I've been teased before when I've visited the US before.
Americans might tease someone, in a nice way, if there is such a thing, if they like someone. Teasing to be mean will come off quite differently. The Irish, and their accent, tend to be well-liked in America. They've sent us quite a few people over the years. Be yourself and let people like you for that.
Don't worry. The teasing is just superficial. I love accents and I make people say funny things if they have a really cool accent. I always compliment them though, so hopefully they don't get upset.
I like guys with accents since that shows they have experienced different cultures and ideas. Also, your accent will slowly change but never go away. I met a professor who most people would consider speaks standard American English, but I could tell from experience that he was using some Scottish-like words, and it turned out he came from Scotland many years ago.
