    I'm just curious.
The stereotype is that we're all really liberal, right?
(...Maybe that's why the far-right is picking on LGBTs...)

Yep, politically, economically, and socially moderate, more-or-less.

Considering 99% of conservatives are against gay marriage (and other things <_<), I'm unapologetically liberal :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I'm a moderate, since being conservative (or traditional) on some issues and being liberal on others sort of balances out. Overall, I'm clearly to the left of center. I march to the beat of ME as drummer.

Good thread idea. I don't think that this is a popular place to be ... well, being conservative certainly is not!

I'm a recovering republican. If I had to choose a political party now it would be libertarian. Less government and more personal responsibility.

I'd like to think of myself as on the left of center. Not too liberal not too conservative, but leaning towards liberal. In reality though I'm scared to be a radical, or in opposition to public. I think it depends on the context and situation. One cannot truly be of one type. The political ideology is a continuous spectrum.

I at one point identified as Republican, only that was when I was in denial thinking I was an ultra-Christian heterosexual male. Then, the economy crashed, Obama was elected, I figured out I liked men, Republicans did everything they could to sabotage the economy thinking that would help them get rid of the hated Black man in the White House. After seeing that, and watching their party become hijacked by Tea Party extremists who trotted out mentally ill people (Michele Bachmann/Rick Santorum) for President (shudder). I joined the Democratic Party.

More often than not I tend to agree more with platforms of individuals who identify as Republican and would consider myself conservative on a lot of issues. Even so I would be averse to identify with the Republican party (or Democratic party for that matter); I think that's far too easy a way out for a lot of people and I don't like that that tends to carry connotations and lead to broad assumptions as to my stance on a lot of issues.

So yeah, issue by issue but moderate/conservative as a whole.

A lot of LGBT people (usually white and moderately well-off) tend to go through a period of denial that doesn't just disguise sexuality; it expands into conservative attitudes towards everything, from women's rights to poverty to war. It often means that they doublethink; they know they're gay, bi, trans or whatever else, but somehow convince themselves that they're cis-het.

You'll notice that a lot of LGBT people have a history conservatism (I was conservative, I've now recovered very well), but few carry on with it permanently. Not that all LGBT people turn into raging socialists, but most will be social democrats, or slightly right-of-centre (such as Swedish mainstream conservatism or the "loony socialists" the US far-right complains about without realising that they themselves are just neo-fascists)

But when they start coming out (maybe even to themselves), the rest of the conservatism comes crumbling down, and they get more compassionate towards other oppressed groups, moving to the political left. Given that conservatism, by definition, is contrary to LGBT rights (and many other rights of many groups, but I'll leave that aside), it's understandable that LGBT people will identify with political ideologies that are more humane to them and others. It's everybody's right to engage in politics as they choose (within reason), but it makes sense for LGBT people to be more to the left than the right.

That said, I have no tolerance to anyone who is far-right, and I absolutely detest anyone with fascist sympathies. No exceptions.

I also failed to mention race, class, and education within political views and LGBT people, but I didn't want to write an essay.

I'm a moderate. I agree and disagree with things on both major parties.

How would this include Log Cabin Republicans in the U.S., the conservative GLBT wing of the Republican party ... and they're out? But, yes, they tend to be white and affluent, so that part of the equation shakes out.

I guess I'm a bit left of center politically, relatively conservative socially (obviously gay marriage being an exception). But on the other hand, I refuse to see all people on welfare as dumb bums and I actually believe that free healthcare is necessary. I do not advocate wasteful bureaucracy, and I support parents' right to make educational choices for their children (i.e. homeschooling) with minimal government intervention. I don't vote for the Conservative Party of Canada, though.

Needless to say, that makes me a minority in the gay community, but also within the wider society, as my province is very liberal.

You make it sound like conservatism is a disease one recovers from when they realize they are gay... =/

I get your point that conservative views do not promote LGBT rights and it's normal that gay folks would not be okay with that. However, I fail to understand why it would be fundamentally wrong for a gay person to hold more conservative views on say, economy. Lower taxes (whether warranted or not) have nothing to do with sexual orientation...

I live in a part of the world where what you call "social democracy" is the default, and let me tell you, it ain't all pink and pretty. And I don't see how that "social democracy" benefits me as a lesbian.

    I'm definitely not a liberal.

I am pretty much in the middle, though I lean slightly conservative.

I guess I should put my stance here, too.

I actually used to be a hardcore liberal when I was younger. That changed as I matured. So I guess it's a reverse stereotype. Yes, I'm an atheist, and, no, you don't have to be Christian to be conservative. Especially in Europe.

I don't support the Republican party as much anymore. Not after the party got hijacked by fake Christians (as the great Charles Barkley said) and bigoted lunatics (and people who are both). I'll support them wholeheartedly when they "weed out" the ignorant. I have no idea how they'll go about it, but we can teach the homophobes and transphobes that we aren't sinners or degenerates or freaks or mutants or... okay, I'll stop now. People keep saying "tranny" and I'm feeling ill (figuratively and literally). I should deal with it like I normally would. I'll try to find a way to fix this eventually, but right now I'm just angry.

At the same time, I don't like the Democratic Party, either. I don't like the vast majority of their policies- I just like their support for LGBT rights and equality, since I'm a very egalitarian kind of guy.

If I had to choose a party when I'm older, I guess I'd go for the Libertarian party. Because freedom, that's why. Anarcho-capitalism would work pretty well for my beliefs, too.

Tl;Dr Not a liberal. I'm very fiscally conservative, and somewhat socially conservative with some more moderate beliefs and the thing that I support the most is freedom for all!

I used to be a moderate/independent. My views have shifted and now I'm a liberal progressive, and plan to join the democratic party officially when I turn 18, and work on campaigning and maybe go into college and minor in political science. So I guess if the stereotype is LGBT people are liberal, I fit it. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I agree with democratic and green party viewpoints 9/10 times, 4.5/10 with libretarians, and only 1/100 with republicans. That kind of factors into my decision. I think a government should try it's best to better the lives of the most people, not just a select few who have the money and run the checkbook. I want a nice mix of government regulation and personal freedoms.

I also forgot about Log Cabin Republicans. They are way left on gay rights and social issues, but very right economically. Although it's sad that most GOP head people don't even recognize the LCR's.

I'm basically straight down the middle. I swing slightly right in gun rights/economics (with an exception for acknowledging the horribleness of people in power) and slightly left with gay rights and abortion.

So yes, not all of us are Che Guevara. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I grew up in a republican household. Deep down, I still share some beliefs.

However, I have decided that being gay (as much as it drives me bonkers) is part of who I am, so I can't ignore that. To be a gay republican seems like you'd be stuck in quick sand, and no one would help you out. I remember watching a Suze Orman interview and someone asked her about this subject. Obviously, she's a huge financial guru but also a lesbian. She said that above all, no matter what it means financially, her marriage to her partner meant more. That's what I feel. That will always matter more.
