With the 2014 New Year coming up, do you think we will be able to work through all our problems that face us?

    Do you see us...
-Going to Mars then other planets?
    -Wiping out poverty?
    -Adapting to climate change?
    -Making the world more equal?

I've read that humans have an expected 30,000 years left. In what conditions, I don't know, nor in what numbers.

I think our greatest test so far will be the coming of AI that will surpass us within our generation's lives. A test I don't think we are ready for.. then again, maybe it will teach us some humility, who knows.

As for the rest, while colonization of Mars might happen in this century, I don't think it would happen by Earth born people, not in great numbers. The most of its population will be born there and learn to be weary of Earthlings.

On Earth, climate changes are something that can now not be stopped. It will keep getting worse for a century or few. We will have less food, less energy, less land area and much, much less biodiversity. However, there are upcoming innovations that will keep us alive.

Poverty will be with us for quite some time. Only when globalization of everything and anything starts reversing will some societies reach sustainable quality of life.

Hopefully not that much longer, we have ruined Earth. I remember seeing this movie Blackfish about the captive Orcas in Seaworld and they were miserable, they are self aware intelligent social animals that deserve to be with their families in the wild and people took them away and made them do party tricks.

Its stuff like that that makes me hope that one day mankind won't exist

I would bet that it will be sometime within this century. There are several natural disasters that have a decent chance of happening in that amount of time so that is my guess

I wouldn't lose a minutes sleep if the damned killer whales went extinct. Same for dolphins. I hate them all!!

    Everything else can stay though.

My grandma is convinced that the events depicted in Revelation will begin any day now.

I hope she's right, once the Christian fundies have been raptured we can live happily! Peace on earth!

Unfortunately, we'll be left with all the fundies from the wrong denominations, and religions. Since I suppose since none of them agree, they can't all be right.

Funny how "any day now" has been used by fanatical Christians for well over a thousand years.

  15. it is things like this that make me just want to die, or failing that hope for a comet to hit the planet this instant. This attitude towards intelligent creatures that deserve a place on this planet as much (or more than we do since they are not ruining it) make me ashamed to be a human and wish for the end.

as far as the OP's question

it depends on the possibilities of space travel - if it actually is possible to exceed light speed (I don't believe in this) we can colonize and there is no limit.

if not we are going to annihilate ourselves on this dustball and I think fairly soon, I don't have much faith the longer I see what we are doing. I have been warning of stuff since the seventh grade - my parents should have named me Cassandra.

@givepeaceachanc, probably worth pointing out I don't WANT them dead and I certainly don't want to see them suffer, they are just my least favourite animals apart from humans and possibly house cats. Smug bastards.

I don't like the things but I'm not a monster!

I have no idea. We should ask the psychic twins!

    Going to Mars-Yes
    Wiping out poverty-Longer, but yes
    Adapting to a changing climate-Yup
    Making everyone more equal-NO

I think we will last as a species for another 100,000 years, by which time we will have advanced space travel and colonies around the neighboring star systems.

I don't see the point in going there. We have enough problems to solve on our own planet.

I'm going to shove these together, since they have a common cause: capitalism. I feel like the earth's richest (and therefore, most powerful) will do anything they can to prevent ending the things you mentioned, cause it's a threat to their excessive lifestyle.

We need a major revolution, but that's impossible to achieve.

....I feel like such a Debby Downer when posting this.

Depends on how OP we make humanity.
I'm normally one for stability, but if the opportunities are lucrative enough, I'm willing to make a few exceptions.
