This is just ****** right? The whole point of it is that it's completely anonymous so I don't see what's wrong with posting its name?

Anyway, I don't think it's the best place to find intelligent conversation. But feminism has an image problem and is often misunderstood, yeah.

Just to be clear, this wasn't intended to be a serious test or anything.

That also seems to be, unfortunately, a leading view around here. People don't know what it is, and they haven't done any research, but they seem to have expert knowledge on how supposedly extremist, unnecessary, and man-hating it is.

yup...and it is going to be that way for a long long time. It's amazing how gender equality is so scary to some that it basically becomes extreme. On the other hand it also bothers me that some are wliing to paint the whole movement out of some extreme examples. But hey you can't say you aren't used to it right?

Extreme examples they're never able to actually prove exist.

I just dislike the name. I feel the gender equality movement should have a gender neutral name, because that better fits the aims if the movement.

I think of feminism as a higher dictated act to become powerful but in the context of bringing women into a state of equality it's a necessary act.

2nd to last answer fits my views on feminism pretty well.
Gender equality and justice for all? Good.
Majority-bashing female supremacists who use a lot of buzzwords so they can look smarter? Not so much.

If you shake the internet hard enough, then nuts will fall out. You can find examples, but they shouldn't be used as the idea of what it means to be feminist.

You know, I have run into a few real life "man-hating feminists". They do exist, and they make an impression. And that's the problem.

Whenever you have a radical new idea (ex: women are people too, let's fight for gender equality together, we can call it "feminism" because why not, women are people too and the more disadvantaged of the sexes.), you get people that don't understand it. And the most dangerous people that don't understand it are the ones that twist it, because they think they understand it (ex: Feminism, like, women are superior? Well no shit, men pretty much suck, I hate men.). These people become a vocal minority, which leads to the illusion of a very extreme majority. At least, that's how I've seen it play out. Words get twisted, accepted meanings change.

In the classical sense, I am a feminist. When asked what I think of feminism, of course I support the idea, wholeheartedly, because gender equality just makes fucking sense. But the new-wave, man-hating feminists that redefine feminism into something more extreme, I have minimal tolerance for. They do exist, and they're unpleasant.

right, so long as people maybe acknowledge that this vocal minority isn't what we support then I am fine with your statement here

but it won't happen. Because some people (not you) take anectodal experiences and paint the entirety of a group that way

Best example I can think of...black man robbed my store...all black men are evil

Some man-hating feminists exists...all feminists are man hating extremists

    It get's old real fast

    again...not saying you...general statement

Why not switch to egalitarianism, then? Same goals, far less baggage and negative preconceptions.

why switch to it? This is where I have issue with myself (internal struggle)

Does the label matter? Do I HAVE to switch to feminism? Perhaps I stick with it to bring back the good name it still supports. And what if I did switch? Would it make a difference?

See I could care less about the baggage because I don't believe there is any. (personal opinion). As far as the negative conceptions, I haven't met a movement yet that doesn't either A) have negative perceptions, or B) will have them in the future when inevitably someone from the status quo decides whichever fancy label that aims for equality is evil

So yeah, I guess overall I am a feminist and will stay that way

But I welcome anyone from any dogma, ideaology, label whatever who wants what I want

That I can respect. I have no problem with feminists in general, I have a problem with people who insist I am a feminist when I have stated clearly that I prefer to use a gender neutral term or that I am part of the problem because I think using a gender neutral term would bring in a lot more recruits.

I met a 'man hating feminist' once. She's in my class at college. This is what she said: "I'm a feminist me, feminism is good girl. All men are STUPID."

This is someone who has not read a single word of modern feminist theory, and basically things its funny to hate men. She is also deeply homophobic. My point is that she isn't a feminist, she's a female sexist. And that her views don't come from feminism, but ignorance.
