So as a rule, I am not open to Muslims and in some cases devout Christians about my sexuality and gender identity.

I have been gay bashed and bullied before and I just don't want to worry, but someone has said this is being racist.

No, it's not racist. Muslims and Christians are religious groups not a race of people -.-'

Also, if people don't want you to be uncomfortable around religious people, than religious people should make a better reputation in the lgbt community. I don't support the biggest group oppressing me, and never will.

Islam and Christianity are religions, not races.

It's neither racist nor umm... faithist (is that a real word even?) to not want to be open about yourself to religious people, no matter if they are Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Shintos or any other religion really I would say. If you go around claiming all Muslims are homophobes or something like that though then yeah then it gets into discriminating territory, but as long as you don't do something like that it's nothing to be ashamed off considering it's better to be safe than sorry.

Agreed. I've never liked making generalizations, but I am also all for noticing common trends among groups. When 90% of the people in your country trying to stop Gay marriage identify as some variation of 'Christian' than it quickly becomes apparent what is causing the hateful spirit in them.

No! its not being racist! makes no sense in that! Its just your personal opinion and i think its good because there is an element of danger among such people who are hateful. Its best not to be open with such extremists who go the extent of bashing and bullying!

No, I don't think this is being racist. I do the same thing, and we do it for protection. Nobody wants to be hurt because of who they are, and if they know that specific people will not like them for who they are, then they either try to avoid them, or simply don't tell them how they feel. It's the main reason I haven't come out to my parents yet, because we are a very religious family, and I know how my mom, at least, will react.

If you feel like you are going to be hurt by someone because of who you are, then don't worry about telling them. It's not worth the pain.

    I hope this helps.

Also, as others pointed out, it's not actually racist at all. XD I kinda figured this would be an obvious answer, but as others pointed out, whatever religion somebody is in, it doesn't make them a certain race. XD It could technically be called theophobia or xenophobia, but it isn't either one to not want to tell people who you are.

What about Jewish? isn't that like a race/religion? I've never really understood that fully.

It's confusing indeed. From what I gather, Jew as a word means both someone of Hebrew decent and someone who believes in Judaism, but why it means both is something I have no idea about when for example Muslim doesn't mean someone who is both of Arab decent and believes in Islam as a comparison.

(also I might be wrong on this, but this is how I understand it, so someone correct me if I am wrong)

Probably because they are 'God's chosen people' or whatever.

From what I can gather, and keep in mind, I only have one Jewish friend, and we rarely get to see each other, it can be a race, but is usually used to refer to the religion of Judaism. Not every Jew is born Jew, but any person can be Jewish. Does that make sense? So, I think, that usually it would mean religion, but it can occasionally mean race.

If anyone else has a better answer, or has any more info, please comment, because I would be interested to learn more about this as well. I've only given the best answer I can give with my knowledge.

It's not racist. Muslims and devout Christians are not safe to tell anything related to gender.

Umm that statement is a little bit discriminating, I have several Christian online friends who are okay with my gender and sexuality, and as you can see MrAllMonday and The Prince here are open minded Muslims.
