I couldn't find a post about this already (please redirect me if I've missed it) so...

    Nicola Adams
    Alan Turing
    Eddie Izzard
    Stephen Fry
    Mark Gatiss
    Jack Monroe
    Billie Joe Armstrong
    Rose Dix
    Oscar Wilde

I'm surprised no one's said Ellen DeGeneres or Jane Lynch yet.

Ellen DeGeneres and Chely Wright are very inspirational to me. I've also watched allot of really lovely gay/lesbian/bisexual people on youtube who have helped me feel less alone.

Huh, I'm trying to think of famous authors, artists and (indie) musicians, and having a hard time coming up with too many people...there seem to be more mainstream/celebrity sorts, than more 'serious' writers/artists.

It's hard for me to find a lot of living examples I really identify with.

You know it saddens me that after literally looking up EVERY name on this post that almost 90 percent of the people listed are actors/writers, a small few sports personalities, and a an even tinier few politicians.
Now some of these people are of great talent but lets face it most artists and actors will never really mark history in a lasting way nor will they add something that literally improves the lives of mankind.
I find it disappointing that other then:
    Allan Turing
Nikolai Tesla ( He by all accounts was asexual
Jack Andraka ( How many even know this amazing kids name?)
There are very few names in the LGBT community that can claim achievement in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields of study. It are those disciplines and business that will allow us to mark history in a way that cannot be ignored in my opinion. Its hard to have politicians write laws against us if we control billion dollar cooperation, its hard to say gays are evil when we can say "sure but we cured cancer, it just worries me to see so few people in the lgbt community reaching heights in the disciplines that will change the fate of nations.

James Beard - I didn't know he was even gay until well after I admired him - which I like. It's always nice to find out someone's gay or lesbian after you start looking up to them. Mentioning it matter-of-factly and not making it a big deal allows them to establish credibility in their field.

Plus I am completely in love with the idea of being a classy older gay man like in times gone by.

I don't really have heroes. There are celebrities who I think are awesome and that I respect. Although I can't think of many lgbt celebrities. The few that come to mind:

    Tegan And Sara
    Leisha Hailey

Tchaikovsky! Not really a hero, but he was gay and I like his music. I probably have some heroes who happened to have been gay, but their sexuality was not something their biographers talked about.

I actually accepted my sexuality only yesterday after watching a documentary about gay athletes on TV ( CNN World Sport Presents: Journey of the Gay Athlete) the athletes that featured on there really inspired me into accepting who I am, especially Blake Skjellerup
