Just curious. I listen to a lot of Taylor Swift, Adele, and top 100 type stuff and very little dubstep or metal, which is what most of my friends listen to. Once one of them took my iPod in a car ride and let's just say they were not impressed. I was ridiculed for a week afterwards (especially because of the couple of 1D songs I have).

Has something like this happened to you? I know that "boys aren't supposed to like girl music" a lot of the time and so I would expect someone in my situation to receive ridicule, yet I know someone with similar musical tastes who hasn't experienced this.
I'm also not sure if the reverse applies and so I guess I'm just curious.

I get it from everyone all the time 'cause my music tastes are all kinds of diverse.

I listen to country music. Not "Taylor Swift country," but more independent, local kinds, such as Red Dirt country music or even old-timey country music; heck I even have Jimmie Rodgers on my iPhone . It's twangier and a lot of people hate it, especially those who can only tolerate pop country. Some friends call it "hillbilly music." While it sometimes bugs me because a lot of it can have plenty of soul in it, including my current favorite band "Turnpike Troubadours," it doesn't bother me enough.

Perhaps it's because country music is perhaps a bit "masculine" and it fits with what a guy "should" listen to based on gender norms. I have been told that I listen to music only straight men listen. So my situation is similar to the OP in the sense that I do get ridiculed, but for different reasons.

Unfortunately, many people fall into the, "I like all kinds of music except rap and/or country."

    yup

    Two reasons

    1. I love the Spice Girls...ok I might desrve this one

    2. Being a child of the 80's, I LOVE pop...and I get teased for that too

    oh well

if I made it my practice to care what others thought I'd be screwed

I've always thought of guys like Johnny Cash whenever someone said "country music". Taylor Swift seems more like twangy pop from this outsider's perspective. The closest thing to country I've listened to beyond a one-time thing might be southern rock/metal and blues, but otherwise didn't mind what I've heard.

And rap, I won't even go there. Everyone here listens to it, but I just can't. So yes, my tastes are definitely in the minority where I'm from, though since branching out, have met a lot of independent scenes across the internet.

I like metal, so yes. But it is a fact that metal is the best kind of music. \M/

I like almost all kinds of music. I don't like most rap/hip-hop (Kanye is great though), dubstep and EDM are boring, and I generally dislike heavier rock music.

I don't get a lot of negative reactions except for "hipster", which I personally don't find is a bad thing at all.

Sometimes, but I don't care. I'm a horrible person as well when it comes to other people's musical tastes, especially when someone likes Mumford & Sons.

I really like 1920-1950 American big band music. I listen to it on the radio a lot. Although my dad says it's nothing personal, he does laugh whenever I say that I found a song I really like. It's pretty saddening because he almost never makes fun of anything I like.

I have the musical tastes of someone about 10 years older than me, so a lot of my friends give me shit for it.

I'm sorry, hipster friends, Better than Ezra is better than Mumford and Sons. Deal with it!

And I listen to really heavy shit like Chelsea Grin, Whitechapel, Amon Amarth etc.

I get told my music is "weird", but not really anything else. My friend group has a lot of different views on what is and isn't good music, so I'm pretty open to it all, including rap and country.

Yes, because I listen to indie, folk and alternative stuff.

But I make fun of people who listen to Slovak R&B and hip hop, and people my age listen to it a lot.

    "Okay." :eusa_eh:

^^Most people's reactions when they find out I listen almost exclusively to classical (listen, not have on in the background).

Given humanity's apparent wish to put other people down for even things so silly as musical taste, combined with the fact that everyone has different tastes....

If you haven't had people react negatively toward your musical preferences you're lucky. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

People have tried to bully me to suicide over my music tastes (I wish I was making this up), so yep. Apparently not liking whatever thing is "cool" in the Indie scene is justification for being witch hunted or something.
