    Prepare for the ranting :tantrum:.....

A company called my house today so I picked up the phone and the computer operated system began its prompting as soon as I said "Hello" by saying "Hello this is Amanda with _____ and we are conducting a survey, may I speak to the man of the house"

Excuse me? Why do you assume there has to be a man in my house?

The machine then went on to ask:

"Do you believe that you should have full control over what programs, television shows, movies, and other network programs your children, grandchildren, spouses, and other dependents view?"

:tantrum: IS THIS THE STONE AGE??

I shouted "No" into the phone (oops I skewed their results, my bad)

    They then asked:

"Do you feel like you should have full control of the medical decisions made by the members of your household"

Okay that's not even legal after they are a certain age, what is this?
I got so fed up that I hung up the phone.

Does anyone have any idea what these things are for? Are they jokes? Please say they are kidding?

What really got me was that it was a woman's voice asking me the questions

Oh, the amusement of heteronormative society/cave people thinking...

You should've said 'no and there won't ever be one' on the opening question. That is pretty hilarious though, after listening to the following questions. Did they forget to shut this thing off years ago? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Wow, that is awful. I would have attempted to get into a heated debate with the questioner, then complained to something official, then raised awareness about how terrible the company is.

Dang I should have, if only my temper hadn't gotten the best of me. I was appalled by it all

Well, you could still complain and/or trash the company.

Yeah, I'd definitely at least figure out wtf this company is and lodge a complaint. It's sexist and stupid and insulting, but as you said, that question about medical decisions, that's just plain illegal. I'm *hoping* there was some oversight somewhere; Otherwise, sic the Better Business Bureau on them.

Ew. Ew ew ew ew ew.

    Ew.

I just... Is it some kind of political thing? If they are marketing a product, just stick a fork in me and serve me with a rich brown butter sauce, because WOW. Either way, normalizing that kind of thing- "Do you think you should have full control of the medical decisions and media consumption of everyone in your household including your spouse"- is really unsettling. It would certainly make me happy if you could take some kind of action.

A serious "Yay" from over here, then. (Also: I am stealing Tersely Toned. It contains alliteration, and is therefore superior.)

Edit: Well, I guess that makes sense. My local news station has a "Don't Waste Your Money" thing for bad businesses- if it seems like whatever they're selling is sketchy, you might be able to sick someone from your local station on them, since they've probably been calling other people in your area. That's a lot of hullabaloo, though, and you've already done pretty much everything you can. Ugh, just a gross situation.

I am honored to have someone else using Tersely Toned, normally I get picked on for it.

This is nothing like the stone age. Middle ages, Renaissance, Colonial/Napoleonic etc.
This a small thing to get angry over.

I'm delighted to see you taking some action. It might be worth looking into how else you might attack them. Maybe a human rights or feminist organisation?

Also, I like this 'tersely toned' thing
