Have you ever listened to a song that's really struck you, and you've never figured out why? Any song that's made you just feel incredibly emotional for reasons you can't explain? If so, did you ever figure out why?

I just did...I've loved and adored the song "Rag Doll" by Frankie Valli and I could never work out why...it's just struck me why...

When she was just a kid her clothes were hand me downs
They always laughed at her when she came into town
Called her rag doll, little rag doll
Such a pretty face should be dressed in lace
I'd change her sad rags into glad rags if I could
My folks won't let me cause they say that she's no good
She's a rag doll, such a rag doll
Though I love her so I can't let her know
Rag doll, I love you just the way you are

It's like someone saw the little girl inside me and wrote my exact feelings about her...

I was about 10 when Augustana's one hit came out, and "Boston" describes me 100%. Longing to move away somewhere where nobody knows me and start my life all over again.

I can't listen to this song without starting to cry a bit. If you know the story of my childhood, you know why.

Sissy's Song by Alan Jackson, makes me want to cry every time I hear it. The lyrics are

Why did she have to go
So young I just don't know why
    Things happen half the time
    Without reason, without rhyme

    Lovely, sweet young woman
    Daughter, wife and mother
    Makes no sense to me
    I just have to believe

She flew up to heaven on the wings of angels
By the clouds and stars and passed where no one sees
And she walks with Jesus and her loved ones waitin'
And I know she's smilin' sayin', Don't worry 'bout me

    Loved ones she left behind
    Just tryin' to survive
    And understand the why
    Feelin' so lost inside

    Anger shot straight at God
    Then askin' for His love
    Empty with disbelief
    Just hopin' that maybe

She flew up to heaven on the wings of angels
By the clouds and stars and passed where no one sees
And she walks with Jesus and her loved ones waitin'
And I know she's smilin' sayin', Don't worry 'bout me

    It's hard to say goodbye
    Her picture in my mind
Will always be of times I'll cherish
    And I won't cry 'cause

She flew up to heaven on the wings of angels
By the clouds and stars and passed where no one sees
And she walks with Jesus and her loved ones waitin'
And I know she's smilin' sayin', Don't worry 'bout me
Don't worry 'bout me, don't worry 'bout me

Also the song I Need a Reason to Sing by All Sons & Daughters and the lyrics for that on are

When the pieces seem to shatter
    To gather off the floor
And all that seems to matter
Is that I don’t feel you anymore
No I don’t feel you anymore

I need a reason to sing
I need a reason to sing
I need to know that You’re still holding
The whole world in Your hands
I need a reason to sing

    When I’m overcome by fear
And I hate everything I know
    If this waiting lasts forever
I’m afraid I might let go
I’m afraid I might let go
    Oh Oh Oh

I need a reason to sing
I need a reason to sing
I need to know that You’re still holding
The whole world in Your hands
I need a reason to sing

    Yeah

    Will there be a victory
Will You sing it over me now
    Oh
    Your peace is the melody
You sing it over me now
    Oh Lord
    Will there be a victory
Will You sing it over me now
    Oh Lord
    Your peace is the melody
You sing it over me now

I need a reason to sing
I need a reason to sing
I need to know that You’re still holding
The whole world in Your hands
That is a reason to sing

Little Lion Man, by Mumford and Sons is like that for me.

    Weep for yourself, my man,
You'll never be what is in your heart
    Weep, little lion man,
You're not as brave as you were at the start
    Rate yourself and rake yourself
Take all the courage you have left
And waste it on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
    Didn't I, my dear?
    Didn't I, my...

    Tremble for yourself, my man,
You know that you have seen this all before
    Tremble, little lion man,
You'll never settle any of your scores
Your grace is wasted in your face,
Your boldness stands alone among the wreck
Now learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
    Didn't I, my dear?

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
    Didn't I, my dear?
    Didn't I, my dear?

    [harmonizing]

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
    Didn't I, my dear?

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
    Didn't I, my dear?
    Didn't I, my dear?

All I want is nothing more
To hear you knocking at my door
'Cause if I could see your face once more
I could die a happy man I'm sure

When you said your last goodbye
I died a little bit inside
I lay in tears in bed all night
Alone without you by my side

    But If you loved me
    Why'd you leave me?
    Take my body
    Take my body
    All I want is,
    And all I need is
    To find somebody.
    I'll find somebody like you.

So you brought out the best of me,
A part of me I'd never seen.
You took my soul and wiped it clean.
Our love was made for movie screens.

    But If you loved me
    Why'd you leave me?
    Take my body,
    Take my body.
    All I want is,
    And all I need is
    To find somebody.
    I'll find somebody.

    If you loved me
    Why'd you leave me?
    Take my body,
    Take my body.
    All I want is,
    All I need is
    To find somebody.
    I'll find somebody like you.

Well there are *tons* of breakup songs that hit seriously close to home... But non-relationship songs... There are a few.

"Sweet Angel of Mine" by Kassie DePaiva
As you lay sleeping on my chest
A million thoughts run through my head
Someday you'll think that you're too big to hold
You'll spill milk on my favorite dress
Fall down and scare me to death
And you'll refuse to do anything you're told

    [Chorus]
And I'll be so mad that I'm almost in tears
And you'll smile that smile and they'll all disappear
Yes sometimes you'll hide your perfect wings
But through these eyes all I'll ever see
Is that sweet angel of mine

I won't be ready for first grade
Or when you go on your first date
And you'll think that I just don't understand
And I know that there'll come a day
When you start to push me away
And I'll feel like I'm losing my best friend

    [Chorus]
So when you want to be out on your own
Forgive me if I find it hard to let go
Yeah someday you'll spread your perfect wings
But no matter where you fly you'll always be
    That sweet angel of mine

And I know I'll cry on your wedding day
As I watch your father give you away
And I'll bow my head, pray you find all your dreams
And thank god for every day he's given me
    That sweet angel of mine

"An Angel" by The Kelly Family
I wish I had your pair of wings
Had them last night in my dreams
    I was chasing butterflies
Till the sunrise broke my eyes

Tonight the sky has glued my eyes
Cause what they see´s an angel hive
I´ve got to touch that magic sky
And greet the angels in their hive

Sometimes I wish I were an angel
Sometimes I wish I were you
Sometimes I wish I were an angel
Sometimes I wish I were you

"She's Crazy" by The Kelly Family
I see the skies through her eyes
And the sun shines trough her smile
Sticks and stones could break her bones
But words could never harm her

She is crazy she is crazy
    You can´t hurt her
    You can`t break her

    The roses are crying
    The roses are crying

I miss her more than words can express
Her lonely dances like the waterfalls

"I wish I could get my head out of the sand
Because I think we'd make a good team
And you would keep my fingernails clean
But that's just a stupid dream that I won't realize
'Cause I can't even look in your eyes
    Without shaking
    And I ain't faking
I'll bring home the turkey if you bring home the bacon
I'm a lot like you so please,
    Hello, I'm here, I'm waiting
I think I'd be good for you
And you'd be good for me."

--El Scorcho by Weezer. Pretty much the quintessential song for a loveshy socially anxious guy.

"Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)" by Alan Jackson

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Were you in the yard with your wife and children
Or working on some stage in L.A.?
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke
    Risin' against that blue sky?
Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry?

Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know?
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below?
Did you burst out with pride for the red, white and blue
And the heroes who died just doin' what they do?
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters?

I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell
You the difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope and love are some good things He gave us
    And the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Were you teaching a class full of innocent children
Or driving down some cold interstate?
Did you feel guilty 'cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone?
Did you call up your mother and tell her you loved her?
Did you dust off that Bible at home?

Did you open your eyes, hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep?
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Or speak to some stranger on the street?
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Or go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watchin'
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns?

Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers
Did you stand in line and give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love?

    And the greatest is love.
    And the greatest is love.

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?

I was 11 on 9/11 and never did I cry so much as when I got home from school after having seen live images of the event (I was in social studies and we had televisions). I actually can still shed a tear when I hear this song. To be honest, I just got a bit teary-eyed reading the lyrics as I typed.

Say "I´m Wonderful" Lyrics HQ - YouTube

The person that you were has died
You've lost the sparkle in your eyes
You fell for life into it's traps
Now you wanna bridge the gaps
Now you wanna bridge the gaps
Now you want that person back

    And all your ammunition's gone
Run out of fuel to carry on
You don't know what you wanna do
You've got no pull to pull you through

Say I am, say I am
    Say I am wonderful
Say I am, oh say I am
    Say I am wonderful

If what you've lost cannot be found
And the weight of the world weighs you down
No longer with the will to fly
You stop to let it pass you by
Don't stop to let it pass you by
You've gotta look yourself in the eye and

Say I am, say I am
Say I am wonderful, oh you are
Say I am, oh say I am
    Say I am wonderful

    'Cause we are all miracles
    Wrapped up in chemicals
    We are incredible
Don't take it for granted, no
    We are all miracles.

Basically, the entire album of "Viktoria" by Maria Mena. I listened to the whole thing last night, and I could relate to almost every song. Specifically, "The Art of Forgiveness"...

    I would build walls
    For miles around me
    Around anything that hurt
    Any sensitive category
    Kept love at an arm's-length
    It was natural to me
    You did not agree
    You said things like "Unhealthy"
And I took on the task
    Of changing my pattern
    All you did was ask
And the walls all came crashing
    At a welcoming speed
I was convinced you'd never hurt me
And I used to cling to the back of your mind
But I must have let go
    At the moment in time
When she offered careless physical joy
    Both bouncing my heart around
    Like a cheap rubber toy
    And after countless
    Hours
    Of crying
    Trying to forgive you
    Believe you
Grow a spine and leave you
    Grieve you
    I've come to this conclusion
No one prepares you when choosing to stay
How to dare share a bed again
    Keep demons at bay
    She took something precious
That was just meant for me
Not for her eyes to see
    ...
After all the years you invested in me
All the love, tears, and possibilities
I realize that if the tables were turned around
    You wouldn't leave me now

Never Too Late by Three Days Grace is the song that saved me.

    This world will never be
    What I expected
    And if I don't belong
    Who would have guessed it
    I will not leave alone
    Everything that I own
    To make you feel like
    It's not too late
    It's never too late

    Even if I say
    It'll be all right
    Still I hear you say
You want to end your life
    Now and again we try
    To just stay alive
Maybe we'll turn it all around
    'Cause it's not too late
    It's never too late

    No one will ever see
    This side reflected
    And if there's something wrong
    Who would have guessed it
    And I have left alone
    Everything that I own
    To make you feel like
    It's not too late
    It's never too late

    Even if I say
    It'll be all right
    Still I hear you say
You want to end your life
    Now and again we try
    To just stay alive
Maybe we'll turn it all around
    'Cause it's not too late
    It's never too late

    The world we knew
    Won't come back
    The time we've lost
    Can't get back
    The life we had
    Won't be ours again

    This world will never be
    What I expected
    And if I don't belong

    Even if I say
    It'll be all right
    Still I hear you say
You want to end your life
    Now and again we try
    To just stay alive
Maybe we'll turn it all around
    'Cause it's not too late
    It's never too late
Maybe we'll turn it all around
    'Cause it's not too late
It's never too late (It's never too late)
    It's not too late
    It's never too late
