i have been currently writing a series of essays comparing different arts, and i'm having problem with this one.

when i see a performance, i know its a performance art and not theatre, but it varies so much that i dont know how to compare and contrast performance art with theatre.

if anyone can help me with this i would be very thankfull.

I consider theater to be telling a "direct" narrative on the stage. There's no doubt that a story is being told, whether it's through a play or musical, etc. Performance art is all the other stuff. There's usually a story, but it's harder to find. A good example for this could be ballet.

Of course, I could be completely off the mark here, so don't take my word for it! It's just my two cents.
