Are flip flops ok to wear on a first date ?

I've got a first date with this really cute guy soon and I'm thinking of wearing a greyish blue button down shirt, dark jeans and navy Hollister flip flops. It's a casual date, but I don't want it to seem that I'm not trying to look good. And I always wear flip flops unless its ridiculously cold. Would you think that my outfit would work?

I'd say as long as you're shirt and pants looks good (which they do) then you're fine. Hope everything works out

Well seeing you're someone that wears them all the time (and they - assumingly - don't look like cheap ones), I guess that makes it okay. I think I've had it happen to me twice and both times it kinda put me off a little, not like it was a dealbreaker but I did think like "oh...". In a sort of negative way.

At work, we have a business dress code, and an easy mantra to help us stay in check:

"If you are not sure, don't wear it." :eusa_naug

I think that it's a bit too casual. Footwear is a more noticed item of clothing than you may realize, and it does convey the message (even though it may not be your intention): "I'll wear whatever, and if you don't like it, I don't care"

Personally I'd avoid it, unless its your meeting on a near a beach.

Too casual, in my opinion. From the sounds of your outfit, a nice pair of brown leather shoes or maybe some smaller boots would look nice.

I would avoid it, but if that is what makes you comfortable then that is what you should do. It is your comfort that matters

This is probably bias as I'm a feet guy and like being able to see them on a cute guy, but I don't think it is as bad an idea as others feel above.

Maybe not the best choice with what you plan to wear, but it's not horrible.

If you want to wear them, I'd say go for it.

Well, as long as you're not wearing socks with it...

If that's what you normally wear, then go for it. But even some tennis shoes would be nicer than flip flops in the sense that they're casual but still give you a more "put together" look. Though, if you do wear flip flops, make sure your feet and nails are clean .

For me, flip-flops are never OK.

If I become supreme ruler of the earth, I shall ban those evil, noisy flip-flops!

    I found this in shoes.about.com:

Unless otherwise specified beforehand by the person inviting you to the event, flip-flops should generally not be worn to:

    Restaurants with cloth napkins
    Red carpet events
    Churches
    Funerals
    Out-of-office business meetings
    First dates and blind dates
and of course, the white house.

Any guy wearing flip flops on a first date can go, it's a big fat NO to me. Shallow? Yes. But I hate the damn things with a passion.

However, if you're comfortable and think the other guy doesn't mind... why not?
