    It means that you can only have one thing or another; you can't have both for whatever reason. If you have five dollars and two items you want are both three dollars, they are mutually exclusive of each other due to your budget.

    More simply, two events happen at six o'clock on opposite sides of the city. Obviously you can't go to both of them unless you leave early from one and arrive late to the other.
