I'm looking for a job at the moment so that I can stop asking for things from my parents, but my mum seems of the opinion I need a bank account to do so. Is this true?
It's ideal to put your money in the bank, yes. Otherwise you'll have to keep all your money on a company-issued pay card, or in cash, and it won't do anything for you.
I don't know if this is true in the UK but here you have to get a work permit if you are your age. Again I for know if that applies there but it might
One thing to know about getting a job at fourteen- all the jobs you can get sucks :l All are minimum wage, it is hard to get one outside of a locally owned shop, etc... My recommendation is to work at a place nearby. Somewhere you can get to within twenty minutes of your house- or from school. Parents aren't going to chauffeur you around for a minimum wage job
Huh. I'm not sure why your mom would think you *need* a bank account in order to have a job... Granted I'm not from the UK but I do have friends there. It really depends on your circumstances; If you'll be saving most of the money you earn a bank account would be beneficial, you don't want to stash all that money at home. But if you'll be helping with bills or otherwise spending most of what you earn, there's no reason to have a bank account just to put money in and immediately take it out again. That's the exact reason why I'm 26 years old and just last year opened my first bank account.
I'm using it on myself (sounds selfish) Just so I don't have to keep asking my parents for games, my own MIDI keyboard, a PC etc etc.,
The only thing I've heard of is something like paper deliveries. I looked into that at your age, but it entailed getting up early before school, and that wasn't going to happen. But the bottom line is that every single job that they pay minimum wage is going to be 16+
