It feels horrible that there are LGBT people in Africa and they are suffering. So is there anything we can do to help them?

Unfortunately no , The only thing I can think of is going to Africa and actively helping but that would be very dangerous.

Maybe there is a fundraising effort related to this?

What would fundraising do? They're under laws imposed by religion and theocracies. We can raise a trillion dollars, but they're not going to all-of-a-sudden say "It's okay to be gay" if we presented it with them in a golden limo. And a lot of Africa's problems doesn't really come from lack of 1st world effort, but rather poor distribution and/or decisions on the government's behalf. South Africa is really the only exception to this that I can think of.

I suppose I'm taking the OP as having 2 meanings at once, and I'm confused here.

Yes, there are things that can be done, like recently when some UK Anglican clergy spoke out against the draconian anti-gay laws that are being passed in some countries.
BBC News - Archbishops criticise Nigerian and Ugandan anti-gay laws

Ultimately, education will be the only way to get Africans to stop being violently homophobic and also help against ethnic/tribal tensions that boil over into mass revenge killings.
