No... Furries are people who just like anthro creatures. Anthro is mostly just making things human but with some animal qualities. And yes they do dress up but not for sex. Most of the time dressing up makes them feel more like that animal. (I guess) And just to let you know there is porn of this.(But like every fandom there is porn *choke* Mlp *choke*) So I hope that clears things up!

I'm not quite sure myself. Wikipedia seems to think it's a group of people who like cosplay as anthropomorphic animals. To each their own, can't really say I understand what people get out of it.

A furry likes anthro art. This may or may not involve porn. They may or may not dress up as animals. They might go to furry conventions. They usually have a fursona. The vast majority of furries aren't attracted to real animals and they don't harm them. I was a furry during my teen years. It meant I drew pictures and wrote stories. I had no desire to take my furry interest offline. But I imagine some do and it's a community thing.

I'm gonna add that the fursona can be an alter-ego. It's what they wish or imagine they'd look like as an anthro and/or feral animal.

I think the posters above have kind of summed up what a furry is. I dated a furry for a while, it was pretty interesting. Also I kind of thought I was a furry for a while, but I don't think I am now.

Okay, people who even fursuit is a minority in the fandom, as they're expensive, people who have sex in them even smaller. (Tank you NCIS for that one :/)

Me and my boyfriend both are, and aside from us liking certain artist, how we draw, and our pet names for each other, we're just normal folk.

It's like being a Whovian or part of the Homestuck fandom, there's people who like, some people who take it too far, and people that the fandom itself doesn't really like.

I've seen furry art that turns me on sometimes, but I would never go and dress up as one. That's kinda pushing it in my opinion...

Here I am! I'll try to explain what this means to me, but give me a bit of time to organize my thoughts. Part of it is a sense of pure, whimsical fun, part of is spiritual, part of it's sexual, and all of it is highly imaginative. Furries vary a great deal...I'll return to explain the ways I express it a bit later. But it has been very liberating, at least as much as when I came out as being gay, though in a different, broader sense.

It's a fetish for anthropomorphic characters. Most furries don't actually fursuit, partly because they're disillusioned with the quality of real-life options available and because suits are huge money sinks.

I'm a furry as well. Happy to answer any questions people have. I've been in the community for a long time and been to conventions and lots meetups.

How did I know? Well, that part come towards the end. But it was a reconnection to my more primitive, animal self, you could say, that happened almost by chance...

OK, now to try to describe what being a furry means for me:

    1. I have a primary ‘fursona’, which is more or less a persona, or a kind of alter-ego; an animal version of myself. My primary fursona is an Alaskan Malamute: Friendly, strong, having great endurance, and loving to romp about in the snow, full of energy. And a bit stubborn. It’s just a different way of imagining myself that I find liberating, as it allows me to be less serious. I’ve often been a very intellectual, arts-prone sort, and in many ways, this allows me to escape those bookish qualities, and discover a more playful, goofy side of myself.

    2. This fursona is often used in what are called ‘role-plays’ or open ended stories I do online with other furries. They involve making a list of the various traits of the characters we’re going to play, and then coming up with a plot, or storyline. I see it as a kind of collaborative fiction, where one person posts, then another, carrying the story along. It’s very open-ended, and might me non-sexual, or it might be sexual. I’ve found it a good way to practice writing fiction, especially dialog, which I’ve always had trouble with in a way that’s fun, and where I feel I don’t have to be writing some kind of literary masterpiece.

    3. I don’t have a fursuit, but would like one. For me, this wouldn’t be sexual, but just a way to be goofy, and have fun. I like the way it allows you to be hidden, and do whatever silly things, as some other being. There’s a certain release to it. Watching fursuiters do things like dance The Time Warp can be very amusing!

    4. It helps me connect with the primal, or a more natural state, and in this sense, is as close to spiritual as I get. I also have ‘secondary’ fursonas I use, namely a fox and a skunk. It’s interesting to put yourself into the mindset of these various animals, and their human-animal hybrids. I enjoy trying to think of what it must be like to be some other animal, something perhaps simpler and different than being human; a kind of regression, a meditation of sorts.

    5. I enjoy the sense of community it brings, in talking to other furries. We joke around a lot, but I’ve also made some very close friends who have helped me through some of my most difficult times. Though sometimes laden with drama, I’ve found furries to be a very open-minded bunch on the whole.

    6. As for the sexual: It’s not something I just talk about with anyone, and it definitely doesn’t involve sex with animals. Yuck! However, inasmuch as it is sexual, for me, it involves imagining myself in an animal-like body. I first stumbled on furries because my mate and I found out we liked puppy-play, where I was the pup: Collar, leash, pup-mitts, pup-suit (latex, not fur, though)…so that it involves being submissive, but in a loving, frolicking, playful way, and not one that involves pain-at least for me. I think of it as a way to get into a more animalistic mind-set, and one that makes me feel a lot more wild, in the sense that animals seem to have zero guilt about sex, whereas us humans have whole message boards trying to come to terms with it all. So again, in an almost meditative way, even sexually, it’s a sort of liberating regression.

    ~

Hope this helps explain things. It’s not something I parade about to the general public, though I will talk about it if asked. And, it’s helped make me happier. If people find it weird, Oh, well…I decided long ago that I can’t really control what others think, so that it’s best not to let others get you down.
