OK, I decided to finally post a poem, or maybe start posting more. Many have LGBT themes, though this one is more about the fear of getting older, or perhaps fear in general. Or depression. I'm still revising it, but here goes:

    Owl

    They don’t see you
    sitting perched
    on the branch,
    eyes still as mirrors
    until it’s too late
    and your thick body
    swoops down
    trough the tangled branches,
    navigating that leafy maze
    without sound,
the squirrel struggling in your talons
    born aloft to his death.

We don’t see the oncoming headlights swerving over the double yellow lines
    the figure in the dark
    the one drink too many
    the tumor before it forms
    the flood before it flashes
the life running out from us.

    The owl knows.

    He waits for you
    at night
    as you toss
    sweating
    in dreams
where teeth crumble apart like chalk,
    your vision dims to nothing
and none of the lights work.

    Unable to see
    or even run
    through the thicket of briars
    piercing your legs
    the ground gives way
    to nothing
    & you plunge
    into the river rising
& snapping trees along its bank like match-sticks
as the rapids pull you under
    to drown
    in the covers
    of the bed
    where you will someday die,
    caught in the talons
that have always clenched you tightly in their grip.

    It is already too late.

    Oh wow.

I think that put all the poems I ever wrote to shame, oh well lol

    It's deep, thoughtful, well inspired.
I like the metaphor behind it to, and I'm not really sure how to properly describe this. It felt kind of like journey the flow was easy to get lost in. You're a rather brilliant writer friend.

Aw, yer makin' me blush! It's a poem I started maybe a few years back, then decided to rearrange and revise. I tend to to a ton of revisions. I generally try to just let the first draft come out even if it's crappy, and just keep polishing it. It's weird, but looking at this, it's hard to say how many hours went into it...I'm a sorta slow writer. But over time, I've come to see revision as the the better part of writing, in terms of time.

But as for writing, never feel bad about it. Just keep going. Often, my biggest problems are just getting started...I have to shut out those negative 'voices' in my head.

Haha I know that feeling. It's how I am about writing. I've been just making myself write lately. Now I just have to get myself into the notion of proofreading. I don't really know why I have a weird aversion to it. I think I'm just afraid to look at my own writing lol

I know the feeling. Sometimes. I write something, and I look and it and think, geez, This is so bad, it's painful...and yet I know what I'm trying to 'say' it just isn't coming out right.

Maybe look at proofreading/revision like making a sculpture...a process where you form something that can happen in smaller steps.

I wish we had a poet corner on this site. For all that are inspired to write. Just a thought!

I think I ought to at some point. I actually have a few things that I think still need tweaking and playing around with. I like the general idea behind them, and I even like the way they turned out for the most part. I could probably play around with them a bit sometime ^^

You're poem was pretty good. You're pretty talented I hope you don't lose spirit for it and please feel free to share more. I enjoy a good read

Thanks so much for the encouragement! I've been a bit stalled on motivation these days, so it feels good to hear.

This poem was one from a series inspired by various animals...so far I have poems loosely based on and titled:

    Red Fox
    Anteater/Antbear
    Skunk
    Groundhog
    Earthworms

It's hard to say what inspires these choices, exactly...

Then, there's a ton of poems about growing up, loneliness and longing. I suppose images from nature are a common theme in all of them, since I grew up in the wilderness, and it left a lasting mark. I'll have to post some more soon!

I have a bit of a love for foxes so you'll def have to share 'Red Fox' sometime

Oh and I'm happy to encourage a fellow writer, especially when they've got talent like you do.

Nature is a good place to draw inspiration from.

Growing up in the wilderness, that sounds interesting. I remember always wandering off into the woods as a kid to play, but I could hardly call myself any good with nature these days. I don't even wander outside so much anymore unless it's raining

You read my poem, I read yours  I love it, really. I'd taken free verse for granted in 8th grade...forms suck man, free verse forever :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I love your metaphors, you have a good "taste" for that. I couldn't really find a way to say that. Definitely post more!

Normally I hate poems, because most of the ones I had to read for English classes were dry and overblown.
This one reminds me of actually talented poets though, like Poe or William Butler Yeats. You've got some real talent Husky, its got a great unsettling atmosphere.

Thanks, everyone for all the kind words and encouragement. They mean more that you might think. And it reminds me I should write more regularly...it's been an on and off thing, depending on things like depression/anxiety/life getting in the way. But it does seem to help transform certain dark emotions into something else, so I can feel more free of them.
