This thought just popped up after I was trying to conclude my last thread with "Thanks guys". I don't know why but anytime I'm about to say, write or type this simple phrase or the phrase "you guys", I feel like it might offend people. I guess its because when I say "you guys" I feel like I'm leaving out the girls. I think this question is more directed towards the girls here but everybody feel free to chip in. So yeah, your thoughts and comments on the subject, does this phrase offend you?

Nope. I know a lot of women that use that phrase to refer to other women.

I have a friend from New Jersey who always says "hey you guys" and I found it amusing given that most of us use some incarnation of "y'all." None of the females seemed to mind him, though.

I just use "you" by itself as a plural for most of the time. English makes things slightly more difficult without distinctions between types of second person pronouns.

For me, "you guys" and "y'all" are standard phrases for me to use, and no one I know has a problem. I do get funny looks sometimes when I say y'all because of where I live.

probably from where we we were born and raised, different phrases might sound a bit weird. "you guys" sounds pretty normal in my head, "you people", "you f*ckers", etc. on the other hand might come across as a bit aggressive (not in a good way). i even call females "dude" from time to time.

I say "you guys" for everyone, including my lady friends...I don't know anyone that would get offended by it. Most people I know say it.

I say it all the time to my group of female friends. Not offensive to me at all.
This made me laugh because it's so true. XD

To me, 'you guys' sounds kind of funny and and I agree with 'you people' being more of an offender.

    I usually use y'all myself.

I dunno. I think it's just a general reference term, you know? My female friends use it to refer to our groups, I use it, everyone and their grandmother uses it... And Sloth uses it, so we're all cool.

Its more of a neutral term for me considering I use it when talking to any group of people. So no I don't find it offensive, I don't know who would.

Well, my female friends use it all the time, and they even call one another 'dude' ...so I don't know of anyone who is offended by the term.
Though I've seen someone call a group of females "you girls". They didn't seem to mind either.

I usually call people by name if I know it Nyu~, but if I'm in a group I might use the Japanese term Ohayo Minna Nyu~ I don't really find "you guys" to be offensive.

Not offensive at all. I use that phrase myself. When I say it, it includes all genders, not just males, and I assume it means the same thing to other people who use it

"You guys" has never offended me. The word "Guys" is pretty casual for both males and females. I have never witnessed anyone who had a problem with it.

This is no different than in Spanish using "Ellos" as a general 3rd person plural.

It would seem that language does have a slight male bias (why is it always "man and woman, he and she, him and her" and never the other way around), but no one really seems to notice, let alone let it get to them, so I'm not losing sleep over it or anything.

We really need 'yous' and 'yall' to be used everywhere and all the time. Whilst we're at it - if we're gonna insist on this Sir/Ma'am business, then I suggest we bring back the thou/you distinction. Like in pretty much every other European language.

    Yes these things matter. maybe.
