Do you drink using a straw at restaurants?

For some reason, I prefer the cold glass touching my lips and always eschew using the straws. My mom prefers to use a straw because she thinks it's more sanitary. I also prefer to drink straight from a cup because, when I'm with friends in casual settings, I like to drink the beverage and chew ice; I know, Emily Post is turning in her grave

Do you prefer to use straws or drink from the glass directly? Is there any rationale behind your choice?

I detest straws. In any case, I only drink water, tea, and coffee, which generally aren't taken with a straw.

It had never occurred to me to use a straw. Now you mention it, I don't recall seeing a place to get straws from in any of the (few) restaurants I've visited over the last few years.

I like broad straws, though I often end up biting the ends off out of habit. But sometimes instead of one broad straw they give two reeeeally narrow straws. I never use those :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Or else, sometimes they don't give me a straw at all which I don't mind either.

If it's there, and it's broad, I'll use it.

Maybe we're more wasteful in America. Many of the low-to-mid priced restaurants here offer them in an almost perfunctory routine. We love to waste on napkins and straws and get diabetes thanks to the American concept of "free refills."

The only places that don't have straws seem to be fine dining establishments . The food may be good, but the beverage selection seems to be a very snobby choice between alcohol and San Pellegrino/Acqua Panna. No straws. And it seems I always have to ask for the ice. I promise I won't chew it .

I do. It's very convenient when you're wearing lip gloss/lipstick.

If I'm given a straw, yes, if not, no.

But I will always eat the ice at the end, so a straw is useful in scooping the cubes to the edge of the glass :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I just give the bottom of the glass a tap to loosen the ice

Only if the drink is served in a cardboard or plastic cup with a lid on top (ie like Subway or cold drinks at Starbucks). Otherwise, no, why would I lol?

I like using straws. For me at least, it helps to make the drink last because I usually end up drinking in less amounts than when I'm not using one.
