  1. Since the recent threads talking about cars, one topic pops into my mind. What kind of car transmission do you guys want to drive.

I know that in Canada and the U.S, most of us mainly drive cars with automatic transmission while in the rest of the world, you guys drive manual cars. I'm wondering if you guys in Canada and U.S prefer manual cars while if the rest of you guys prefer automatics.

I prefer automatic cars because it's extremely simple to drive. To drive an automatic forward, release the parking brake, put the gear shift into drive, and press on the gas. It seems way more complicated when you have to change gears by hand when you reach a certain RPM, and it's something that I'm very likely to forget, which is pretty dangerous for me.

So what do you guys prefer, automatic transmission, or manual?

I drive an automatic....but manual is more fun. I just need to get better at shifting, haha.

I can drive both. It's been years since I've been behind the wheel of a manual, but I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to pick up again.

I selected manual because that is what I actually prefer. It gave my driving experience a much more sporty and energetic feel. However, on a practical level, I live around a major city and I am not sure I am motivated enough to really deal with a manual in the constant stop-and-go traffic...and it's only getting worse. Also, I have found that manuals are becoming quite rare on new car lots these days anyway. Also, I am an environmentalist and will probably make my next car a hybrid and those don't come in manual. While manuals are my preference, I think they're becoming a thing of the past (and have been for a while) and I most likely will never own another.

Automatic for sure, considering both of my cars are automatic.

I only drive the automatics of my mother and brother. I need to practice with manuals, but automatics make it a little easier to concentrate on the road and the traffic.

Manual. Always so much more fun. The 6 speed in my car was actually a +625 dollar option over the auto. The auto option is usually the more expensive option with most cars.

My family only has manuals, and I learned how to drive in a manual, so the choice was pretty easy. Save the Manuals!

Automatic for me. I'm told that manual is more fun, but with the traffic I have to sit in on a daily basis that would quickly turn into a nightmare.

All of my cars have been manual and I've only had the pleasure of driving an auto once (a hire car on holiday). In the UK, traffic is so awful that I find it a chore driving manuals as you are constantly pressing the clutch pedal and changing up and down through the gears.

I don't know how to drive a stick, so I have to go with Automatic. Not sure I ever want to learn to drive a stick.

In all honesty, you don't even pay attention to the RPM once you've driven manuals for a while. The sound of the car, your speed and need to slow down or stop kind of tells you it's time to change up or down a gear. You end up changing on instinct and a lot depends on your driving style too.

This. You get so used to it that it just becomes second nature. I never look at my tach, except for when I'm racing (not on the street). Auto's are definitely nice in traffic, but a terrible bore for me at any other time.

    Manual driver here.

Another vote for "it becomes second nature."

Automatic Scion FRS here but it has the gear switching so I can use the manual paddle shifting like in a Ferrari or lambo. Kinda sweet to drop it down a gear and pass a fool on the highway.
