It's an incredibly common phrase with many variants: "Suck my dick," "Suck a dick," "Hold my dick," "Cocksucker," etc. Throughout high school and now as a college student, I hear people say these things all the time, both known homophobes and friends alike.

I realize that (some) gay men are not the only ones who perform oral sex on other men (and I, personally have never had sex), but it's still bothersome for me when I hear these things. It seems to me that there are two possible reason that the concept of sucking dick is so defamatory: 1) Historically, it has been a way of establishing dominance, the sucker being submissive and the "suckee" being dominant; 2) It's performed by some gay men.

Do you find phrases like this offensive/homophobic?

I suppose in the sense that you're telling someone to perform a gay sex act to prove you're worth less then them...but no I don't see it as especially homophobic most of the time...you know unless you hear someone say "Oh go suck a dick" to a gay person JUST because they are gay...

Yeah, I'd have to go with this. My friends and I say stuff to eachother like go suck a dick all the time. Depending on the tone, that stuff usually doesn't indicate being offensive. It can be offensive though if the person saying it means to offend.

I've told people I hate "to suck my tiny hairy balls", but then again I don't have balls. So yeah, context matters, I'd agree.

If someone told me to suck their dick, I'd probably laugh uncontrollably. I say more vulgar and offensive things to my friends on a daily basis.

*shrugs* I don't find it particularly offensive - there are way more creative and vulgar things to say, honestly. But it's more a case of context than anything. Generally, the context I hear is as a joke with my friends, so that admittedly colors my view a bit.

I usually find it offensive, more so because it's yet another thing that's resulted from patriarchy/sexism. Why? Because it's usually aimed at girls or anybody who does anything remotely "girly".

It's pretty vulgar, but homophobic? Really? I would compare it to "Kiss my ass." Not something you tell your mother or your boss, but nothing more.

As I've often said, if you find yourself offended by things like that, you're going to spend your life being offended.

I've always treated it along the same lines as "kiss my ass." But if you're a gay guy and someone says that to you, I can think of quite a few comebacks for that one...

If its used for a gay guy to feel bad its both. If its used for some random to feel bad its just offensive. If its used between best friends its friendly ....

I think it's a bit arbitrary to scream out "patriarchy!", especially with this. The insult here doesn't degrade women, but it humiliates the target by suggesting them to be the passive/submissive/weaker partner in a sex act, whereas the insulter is active/dominant/powerful. Sorta like how men in war and other volatile areas have been raped -- it's all done with the purpose of humiliation.

I actually hear it directed more at men than women, something you could actually attribute to sexism, since women are often assumed to be passive.
